I worked at Vail Resorts (More than a year)

    Pros

This position is very boring and very basic. Just about anyone can do this role. Decent culture, they try to keep a "startup" feel.

    Cons

Not a whole lot of room for growth or experience due to the extremely large accounting department. Low compensation as compared to other accounting positions.

I worked at Vail Resorts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Ski pass and location.

    Cons

Low pay and every department is under staffed so its a rare opportunity to get one day off during ski season.

    Advice to Management

If you truly want to create the "experience of a lifetime", concentrate on your employees, pay more so that you can hire more decent people, try harder to fill unfilled roles so that the business is adequately staffed. You can't keep buying ski resorts without focusing on service delivery.

I worked at Vail Resorts full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great insurance benefits and 401 k

    Cons

Middle management works so very hard building their teams, managing finances, paying attention to guest service and solving problems, and never gets the respect they deserve. They work 60 hrs a week 6-7 days a week and get paid for 40 hrs. At Breck there are so many men in sr. management positions that bully the people under them and consistently act unprofessional and egotistical.

    Advice to Management

Respect the ideas and hard work middle management gives to the company. Sr. Teams need to make sure they show respect and support for their teams. It is really pathetic the favoritism they blatantly show and the way they walk around feeling so powerful. I have never been so disrespected. The expectation that you have to work 6-7 days a week without getting compensated is against the law and not fair or appropriate. It is obvious they push you out when you get to old or when you have different opinions. It's a shame because the ski industry is fun and exciting. To bad Vail resorts is not taking care of their employees the way they should

I worked at Vail Resorts full-time

    Pros

It's a very relaxed working environment with an open feel despite working in cubicles.

Having a free ski pass and company outings to the mountains was always a great reward for hard work.

    Cons

Very little direction from management - wrote the SOP for my position after it remained unchanged for many years. Management had very little systems knowledge so if you had a question you needed to problem solve it yourself or with IT.

    Advice to Management

Pay your staff a little more - I was offered a job with less stress at double the pay. It wasn't a hard decision to leave.

I worked at Vail Resorts (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance, even though Katz says work is life
Great people to be around; very smart people get hired here
    Team activities on mountain encouraged
    High-growth/entrepreneurial atmosphere

    Cons

Need to rub elbows or brown nose to get ahead
Hard work and sacrifice not rewarded
    Extremely demanding environment
    Pay is low

    Advice to Management

Look at the people you put in charge of projects. Stretching doesn't mean setting people up for failure and not supporting them. The clear vision, strategy and execution is awesome here. One of the best in my career, however people get burned out after about 2-3 years.
