    Pros

    Great Products and Great Benefits

    Cons

Working with product managers and other parties in Finland is challenging. Lack of training for new positions. All training is done by the employee on there own

    Pros

Market leading technology and expertise. Focused on delivering value to customers, shareholders and employees.

    Cons

HQ in Helsinki means limited opportunities to progress outside Finland.

    Advice to Management

More transparency in business performance is required to deliver true performance driven management.

I have been working at Vaisala full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great work life balance, good PTO compensation, flexible work schedule and work from home benefits.

    Cons

Dealing with Finnish style of working, lack of real leadership (bad matrix implementation), clear nationalism (Finnish bias) with regards to promotion opportunties

    Advice to Management

Move to an American style of management in US offices, treat long term employees with the same respect as new employees. Recognize that the European ways of doing business don't always work in North American markets.

    Pros

Vaisala is an 80-year old company that is still doing business which means they know what they are doing. It has strong sustainability and customer practices. Fellow employees are kind, supportive, easy to reach, and believe in their hardware and services.

    Cons

At 80-years old, they are firm in their ways, and relatively slow to innovate. A matrix organization, Vaisala seems to be regularly shifting leadership, leaving a little bit of confusion in the ranks.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and customers. Some management was good, but weakly supported. Some management was skilled in their particular field, but not knowledgable in the segment they were leading.

I have been working at Vaisala full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You're mostly left alone to do your work, so they are typically fine with you working from home. Benefits are pretty good relative to other places. If you want to accomplish little but mostly be left alone and work at a place that is profitable, you'd be happy here.

    Cons

Mediocrity is encouraged. If you want tools to succeed you basically have to create them yourself. Sales rules the company particularly quarterly numbers so any policies or procedures are ignored to make a few dollars, which in turn creates confusion on job roles and what you are supposed to do. Very top line focused with no in depth analysis whatsoever. They are now using terms like 'tiger teams' and 'disruptive' - welcome to the '90s. Lots of time spent managing up as capabilities dwindle as you reach the top. You are not incentivized to do well because you will not be rewarded any differently than your under achieving colleagues.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to run a business instead of pretending you're running a garage sale.

    I worked at Vaisala full-time

    Pros

Vaisala is very good at letting their employees have and take responsibility for their own careers. While working for them I felt my career was for me to define and they would help me get there.

    Cons

Being a large geographically separated company, communication often failed or was very slow for resolution.

I worked at Vaisala full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees I worked with during my time there were great and it had a great environment. There is not a huge turn over rate from my experience. A lot of employees had over 5+ years working with the company.

    Cons

Unfortunately, they moved the a large portion of operations to another state which caused small layoffs.

    Pros

Great people, smart and interesting all around.
    Very good work/life balance

    Cons

Very slow, and lacks any vision to innovate
Company is buried by too much process
A lot of mid-senior level managers are completely ineffective

    Advice to Management

Get rid of so much process. Update the HR team/policies. Give more responsibility and ownership to younger engineers.
