I have been working at Vaisala full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great work life balance, good PTO compensation, flexible work schedule and work from home benefits.

    Cons

Dealing with Finnish style of working, lack of real leadership (bad matrix implementation), clear nationalism (Finnish bias) with regards to promotion opportunties

    Advice to Management

Move to an American style of management in US offices, treat long term employees with the same respect as new employees. Recognize that the European ways of doing business don't always work in North American markets.

I worked at Vaisala full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The overall culture of the company, how they treat their employees and the vacation benefits are all very good or excellent. The work is interesting and I can honestly say that the people working there are a good group.

    Cons

Though the overall culture is good, there is one glaring issue - "not invented in Finland". Vaisala is headquartered in Vantaa, Finland with a long Finnish tradition. As a US based employee it was exceptionally difficult or impossible to stay in the decision making loop, and very often your ideas seemed at best misunderstood and at worst flatly dismissed because they didn't originate in the head office. There was a lack of trust outside of the head office (individuals were obvious exceptions but overall this was true).

Consequently, advancement or serious contribution is impossible without frequent travel to Finland and even then it's very difficult.

Despite the central decision making, management has little or no control over the implementation of those decisions; the lack of process can be frustrating. Frequent management turnover because of this; they can't implement plans or strategies effectively.

Overall compensation - it's quite average compared to most other companies.

    Advice to Management

The company would be stronger if they learn to leverage the experience and knowledge of the people outside of just Helsinki. They have made attempts to do this, but have yet to succeed. Continue trying.

  3. "Great people and products. Processes way too cumbersome for the company to be agile."

    Pros

Vaisala Louisville is an engineering outpost of the mother company in Finland. As a separate entity, this location's people are very close and work well together. They take pride in their products and are very knowledgeable in a broad range of applications.

    Cons

Communication between groups in the U.S. and Finland are difficult until personal on-on-one relationships are built - impossible when travel is frozen. Many VERY complex processes (established in Finland) to get things done makes even the smallest product change take far too much time and too many peoples' efforts. Major organizational changes have helped some projects, but crippled others. Product line maybe getting TOO diverse?

    Advice to Management

Simplify the processes. Allow U.S. engineering some autonomy in their product development. Not every product needs to meet world-wide features/desires/requirements. Potentially run with a smaller subset of the product line, but tuned to U.S. markets?

Company is buried by too much process
A lot of mid-senior level managers are completely ineffective

    I worked at Vaisala full-time

    Pros

Great care for the products and services being offered; thought leader in the industry and subindustries involved; good team building; good environment for self-motivated employees; genuine care for individual employees on the satellite office level

    Cons

Frequent organizational restructuring; too much bureaucracy; often slow in making decisions; reliance on all approval going through HQ in Helsinki diminishes response and reaction and too often things would get lost in the shuffle; paths of growth and advancement unclear; too many meetings and far too much Powerpoint

    Advice to Management

Conservative is a good approach, and the company has existed for so long because of smart and steady decisions and courses of action, but don't be afraid to become more agile. Design an organizational structure that doesn't impede process and progress.

    Pros

Many great, hard-working, brilliant people. Vacation time is substantial.

    Cons

Some managers that will throw you under the bus for their own gain; frequent restructuring/ reorganizing, while there are several great employees, there are also many that do not try to improve, status quo is sufficient, lazy, and incompetent. Very little opportunity for growth. Continued downsizing.
