I have been working at Valassis full-time

    Pros

Great if you love excel and are looking for a job where you work on a team with people who are uninterested in being personable.

    Cons

They're is a lot of talk about work life balance and diversity, but it's all just buzz words. There are people who have had no choice but to get 10 to 20 hours of overtime to just do their basic work while others are able to get their work done and have time to chat. It's hard to tell if the management just plays favorites trying to intentionally burn out some while letting others coast through. Also, they only employ white people and so called model minorities in white collar jobs. This is one of those places thinks a work force with different skin color is diversity in of itself. Everyone is very Anglo and one woman has a make America great hat at her desk, so it should be clear how non white, non Christians are thought of. Also, stay out of what is called MDT othwise you are at the mercy of overpaid sales agents who seem to have trouble reading schedules, only to try to put the blame on you.

    Advice to Management

As long as you value results so much above relationships, expect that question in the employee survey about having a best friend at work get worse and worse. It is too adversarial. Really do something about work life balance and diversity or just quit lying to people that you care about that. I would have a lot more respect if they just came out and admit it's not a real priority.

I have been working at Valassis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employees are extremely open, friendly and helpful. The fun events put on by the committees are always a nice break. Having the ability to work with top, national and international companies.

    Cons

After being acquired by new ownership, Harland and Clarke, the whole vibe of Valassis has changed. They took away several of our vacation and summer days, the health insurance policy is a joke, many departments have been thinned out, so more work with very little pay increases, 401K and retirement matching dipped down, work/life balance has decreased as they want you to be "on call" more frequently and around the clock for days/weeks at a time, and the expectation of having our processes and softwares upgraded are a joke. There is a reason why many departments have constant turnover and many "lifers" are deciding to retire.

    Advice to Management

But the trust back into the employees and listen to what we are saying. Listen to employees when we say our old, outdated systems need upgrades to help improve processes. Hire more employees and put "on-call" duties on management as they should be the ones dealing with crisis.

I have been working at Valassis full-time

    Pros

We have a coffee machine, lots of soda and weekly lunches.

    Cons

The leadership of the digital division in San Francisco pretends to have a vision. In reality, they are not original and are packaging up stale ad placements into supposedly innovative packages. This is trickling down to employees and created a culture of lies, back-stabbing and pretentious celebration of supposed success. There are a couple of execs who think of themselves as big shots. Everyone that truly is original has left or is planning to. One of the reasons they had a big turn-over, especially amongst engineers. It is not a culture of innovation. Or of integrity. Or of accountability. This company will kill your soul. Avoid it.

    Advice to Management

Find your soul. Be accountable. Support originality. Be less absorbed expecting employees to treat you like aristocracy. The employees find out very quickly if you are leading them on.
