I worked at Valassis (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible work time and good parking

    Cons

Lacking clear definition of accountability with regards to a multi-layered operation. Mainly involving independent contractors and outside vendors. Very abstract business planning in the distribution aspect of the operation.

    Advice to Management

Update tech capabilities and streamline. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best way.

    I worked at Valassis full-time

    Pros

Good benefits and decent salary for the area. Opportunities to train on multiple programs.

    Cons

Management and supervisors were very unprofessional. The micromanagement was out of control and therefore as an employee it was difficult to grow within the company. After leaving work we were not allowed to enjoy our home life balance due to the mounting pressures from supervisors via phone and emails. You were watched closely by certain supervisors that harassed you through out the day. The salary was not worth the constant turmoil. The company only encourages growth through personal ties and not by merit. Valassis was by far the most unprofessional company I worked for to date. I would not recommend this company any job seekers.

    Advice to Management

Stop the micromanagement with all employees. Encourage growth and value with your employees by giving them an opportunity to prove themselves. Do away with management and supervisors that stifle growth within employees.

I have been working at Valassis (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great analytics and proprietary targeting programs. good portfolio of products. Benefits and PTO pretty good if you've been there a while. Lots of good talented people working there.

    Cons

The targeting programs are great however they are geared to small local accounts- fast food, local home improvement, furniture, etc. You have a territory and you can't stray out of it if you get lucky and come across a decent prospect that's outside it which is rare. The majority of the"meatier" business is already called for b/w the tenured reps and national accounts so you're stuck with what's left over which you spend your life cold calling. Agencies are very familiar with Valassis and have little interest in shared mail anymore. Company has been struggling with digital for quite a while now and has never really got a foothold in it. Now every company out there has digital so competition is fierce. Management has been pressuring to sell digital with every client. Reps are micro managed to astounding levels!. Forecasts, projections, meetings, conference calls, sales force.com, reviews. You're treated like an entry level rep. Back in the Advo days it wasn't a bad company to work for. Then Valassis (the evil empire) took over and everything changed. Now Harland Clarke owns it; no one wants to get up in the morning and go to work. The passion is GONE and there are layoffs and talented people leaving everywhere. Upper management is clueless. Look at all the sales reviews here. They're all -almost identical to this one.Does that tell you something??

    Advice to Management

Don't know where to start. How about first responding to these reviews?? How many hundred are there and not ONE RESPONSE?? Let's see what YOU have to say guys......????

    Pros

Lucrative sales compensation plan. Merit increases for performance. Flexible work schedule. Solid leadership. My career aspirations really matter to my leaders and they proactively help me get to where I want to go. The company has invested heavily in a new sales approach and it is really driving a lot of new business revenue. The people here are awesome. Upbeat, fun work environment. Ideal for sellers of all ages. Parent company is investing in technology and people to build an even better Valassis for years to come. I really like that. Excellent benefits and 401k match, as well as generous vacation as you build your tenure. Lastly, and most importantly, the product portfolio that we sell drives amazing results for our clients. If you want to feel like a rock star for your clients, Valassis is the place to be.

    Cons

Can't think of any cons. Valassis is growing and it's a great time to be here!

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in people, technology and our portfolio. Our growth numbers are better than ever and it's great to be on a winning team.
