I have been working at Vallourec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They have many employees that have been with the company for 10+ years. Some employees got laid off due to the oil slump but are open to rehiring once things pick up.

    Cons

The industry is unstable and their turnover rate with new employees is high.

    Advice to Management

There should be a better training system for new employees.

I have been working at Vallourec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, benefits package and bonus structure. Smaller office as far as number of employees is a nice benefit even though Vallourec is a larger company. Good travel opportunities from time to time because of the many regions and countries the company does business in. For the most part a great group of employees. As a whole the company is very close to being a GREAT place to work. A few tweaks could turn the direction around and make it a gem in the oil industry.

    Cons

Management is strong in believing in top down management which results in employees that actually do the work being ignored. They talk about listening to employees thought process, recommendations and needs but they simply don't when it comes time for action. Extremely high turnover rate of mid and upper level management due to expat structure kills leadership roles and any company direction. Many of the expats seem to only be interested in making a splash that looks good rather than long term success. This kind of culture also fosters a glass ceiling for American employees who can see ways to improve the company’s product, efficiency and morale. When the time comes for any kind of management job Europeans always seem to be given preference which hurts the business.

    Advice to Management

Understand that the employees themselves can tell you what they need to be more efficient at their jobs. Top down management simply imposes additional strain, stress and level of frustration that helps prevent those doing the work from being successful. The never ending turnover of expats continually changes the direction of the company as it continues to struggle to understand where it fits in the market. Trying to impose the ‘European’ way on the most profitable division in the company continues to frustrate employees. If any lessons can be learned, could it not be the other way around? When there is knowledge of someone leaving (retiring or expat contract running out) have a better solution than expat. Having someone in the wings training under the one leaving is logical for a smooth transition.

    Pros

Great pay if your willing to sell your soul to the devil.

    Cons

Ever since the downturn in the market upper management treats employees like crap. They say they care about you and your family, but let me tell you they DO NOT!!!!!!!! They force you too work unlimited amounts of 12 hour days with no days off since they fired too many people when it got slow. They preach safety, but that is a total crock. If safety was sooooo important, why would they expect there people to work 12, 16, and sometimes over 20+ hours a day and expect them to drive home safely. It's a joke!!!!! Do yourself a favor and apply somewhere else unless you never want to see your family and don't wanna have a life. Ps.. If you work maintenance and wanna work at Vallourec your life is over as you know it. They will run you into the ground and then some. I wish I could give the work/life balance below a negative 100.

    Advice to Management

Your management team is forcing people to quit!!!! When you have nobody left then what? The moral in the Youngstown plant is extremely low. I have never worked at a company where the employees are so miserable and unhappy. I cannot wait to find new employment. I thought when I got hired at Vallourec that I would never have to job hunt again. Boy was I wrong!!! Never in my life have I been treated like this. Unreal.

I worked at Vallourec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Vallourec believes in taking care of the employees that make them successful through compensation, added incentives and robust benefits packages.

    Cons

The company lacked the ability to be receptive to market trends in the onshore markets. They had high turnover in successful mid-level management that had a clear, successful vision for the markets they were trying to gain traction in. In short, losing these key individuals due to being receptive of their vision, ultimately set them back.

    Advice to Management

Listen to tenured employees you bring in who have 30+ years experience in achieving new product introductions and gaining market knowledge to predict trends.
