I worked at Valmont Industries (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Reasonable wage structure, relatively flat org structure, decent benefits, generally good people that work hard, long-term employees are still very common.

    Cons

Old ideas. Low risk, narrow focus on growth opportunities. First sign of trouble, management starts letting people go to manage the numbers. Executive team is very isolated and only manage the business units based on the next quarterly earnings report.

    Advice to Management

Most existing business units are maxed out with respect to new opportunities. New playing fields are needed. No real vision for where to take the company - management lets business conditions dictate their future. A major growth change is needed - new vision for what the company can be - not what it has been.

I have been working at Valmont Industries full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay and 401k is very solid. The work is also very easy and you can learn nearly anything with no experience. Safety is also good.

    Cons

Shop is majorly micro managed and has the worst communication of any place i've ever seen. You will work 40 hours one week then 72 the next with no notice but the day before sometime during the shift theyll tell you. And they change every week, like they dont even know whats going to be on the schedule the next week. They're so lost

    Advice to Management

Get a handle on organization and looking at long term work. Not oh yeah we only have 100 poles to be shipped this week so we good then the next week you want 500 and then 5000 then 20 again. Sit there and do nothing for a month cause were "caught up' then we spend 7 months on 72 hour weeks.

I worked at Valmont Industries (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You can get lots of hours of overtime. And get pizza for your hard efforts.

    Cons

Mandatory overtime 60+ hours a week. Management doesn't know what's going on. Employees treated like they don't matter. Never hear the work thank you.

    Advice to Management

Do some work. Stop coming in late and leaving early every day. Don't walk around with your coffee cup chatting to other managers. Listen to your employees. They seem to know better then the leaders on what's wrong with your company.
