    I have been working at Value Line part-time

    Pros

    Coolest work environment ever, nice location, flexible management, nice people

    Cons

    No career growth at all, you will be highly underpaid, no new tasks, very monotonous

    Advice to Management

    Pay your employees better

    Pros

    -Good work-life balance, no long hours
    -Business casual for the most part
    -Decent stepping stone in finance as Value Line's research has been well regarded in the industry; good intro to stock picking and research
    -Staff is generally helpful and nice

    Cons

    -Very few opportunities to move up the ranks, limited career growth; Basically a dead end job when it comes to advancement
    -A little bit old school when it comes to research methods, product development or selling strategies - rules could change at a whim
    -Relatively high employee turnover, though not as much as when former CEO Jean Buttner was around
    -Occasional acrimony between the various departments
    -Base pay lower than at comparable firms such as Morningstar or Thomson Reuters
    -Upper echelons/management can sometimes be insular and inaccessible

    Advice to Management

    -Find better incentives to reduce employee turnover, such as better pay or a training program to retain analysts and other employees
    -Be more accessible (have an open-door policy for asking the CEO questions) to lower level/junior staff
    -Find ways to reduce the acrimony between departments

    Pros

    -Good work-life balance
    -Work is not very stressful
    -The only financial pro is that a job at Value Line is a stepping-stone towards more lucrative opportunities elsewhere.

    Cons

    -The pay is EXTREMELY LOW compared to industry standards, especially in Manhattan
    -Upper management is insular and inaccessible, even though the company is small
    -Lack of clear goals and guidance from the top
    -Since many fellow analysts work from home, it is rather difficult to collaborate with others and network
    -Departments do not effectively coordinate with each other
    -Few options for career development and advancement

    Advice to Management

    At this point, nothing short of a divine intervention can change upper management. They can try being more accessible, as a start. But until they see beyond their "rose-tinted" glasses and adapt to change, I am not optimistic about my future at Value Line.

    Decent place if looking to break into finance

    Dead end. Not a long term option

    I have been working at Value Line full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    good intro to investing and stock analysis ....reasonable hours (9-5) ...rank and file workers are generally nice (there is a sense that the r&f are in a terrible situation together - which breeds a strange camaraderie)

    Cons

    both upper and middle management are AWFUL ...competitor Morningstar started 40 years or so later than Value Line - yet the former has a market cap of $3.4 billion (while Value Line is BELOW $90 million) ...weak analysts are coddled (for the control) and a small group of managers (who don't even seem interested in investing) run the show. ...company blames its struggles for the growing amount of stock research that's available free to investors - it's a joke

    Advice to Management

    put the company up for sale (maybe the name has some residual value) ...hope that private equity or some other entity bites ...then fire the CEO, as well as the top and middle managers

    I have been working at Value Line full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice people to work with over all. Mostly very young due to the low salaries.

    Cons

    The Product Development and Technology teams are taking one step forward and two steps back. Senior management does not have the skills or insight to revamp this very, very old fashioned company. Company rules are archaic. Factory standards in a high tech environment do not translate. Locking coffee room up from 9-10am is just weird, and so is this company. Politics are vicious and a true path forward is not present. Too little too late for value Line. Loosing customers by the second. I don't blame the customers. Expensive product for something you can almost get for free anywhere on the internet.

    Advice to Management

    You guys are not as smart as you think you are. Higher smarter Development Manager who has a clue and is not so pompous. Get with the times and don't dock pay for a minute being late, and give people access to coffee in the morning.

    Pros

    Access to cutting edge technology, ground up approach to infrastructure, flex time, career growth, innovation. New knowledgable leadership.

    Cons

    Technology is run very differently than the rest of the company. The other departments are still running the Old Value Line way. Politics of being involved in a turnaround.

    Take the lead from technology!
