I worked at Van Andel Research Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great collaborations both within Van Andel as well with outside labs
    Phenomenal staff overall!

    Cons

Pay could be more competitive (however it is dependent on lab funding- every lab is different)

I worked at Van Andel Research Institute part-time

    Pros

Integrated nature of varying labs, encouraging disciplines from different fields of study to work together in order to overcome complex problems.

    Cons

A very high wall to climb in terms of qualifications.

    Advice to Management

Continue to encourage your employees to pursue their own questions as they answer yours. A number of papers were written and published during my time here by lab technicians that had spare time during experiments.

    Pros

    State of the art technology
Stipend guaranteed by school regardless of lab funding
Research and travel funds guaranteed by school regardless of lab funding
    Teaching and mentoring not required
    Career

Hard to finding TA-ing opportunities, but programs are underway to fix that

    Pros

Research non-profit, high tech, top of the line, friendly people, average benefits

    Cons

Bad management, little to no support, not willing to buy top of the line without a fight, purchaser held tight purse strings, Had to strictly work within budget, if you were going over you did without. I worked there for over 4 years. When I got there I literally helped them get off the ground, not rewarded. I had to tell my manager what my job was, he had no clue. ABSOLUTELY NO ROOM FOR ADVANCEMENT! If they fire you they string you along for about a week. In my case they wouldn't fire me, offered a job that I didn't want at a lower pay rate. I then quit. This was all to avoid paying Unemployment Insurance that I earned. If you want to work here, make sure it is the LAST on your list

    Advice to Management

Value those that work under you! Hire managers who have experience managing those under them. You need to hire science people to manage science people, not business people to manage science people. Reward people for going above and beyond. Don't be so stingy with money.
