    Pros

Relaxed enviroment. Nice people. Decent technology and interesting publications to work on (agribusiness related). You will learn something new everyday (especially in AG - journalism).

    Cons

    Acquisition from their main competitor

    Advice to Management

    None. It's changed.

I worked at Vance Publishing full-time

    Pros

There were some really great people in the Lenexa office. Really felt a strong sense of team with just about everyone there.

    Cons

No transparency from Executive Team in Lincolnshire. No communication about company status after layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Complete transparency isn't expected, but some level of communication with all employees is.

I worked at Vance Publishing full-time

    Pros

Minimal involvement from upper management. This company works best for those trying to stay under the radar, get through each work week and don't really have much to loose. Professionally, this is a great stepping stone for entry level college graduates or someone trying to finish out their 30+ career until retirement.
They do offer good benefits, plenty of opportunity to take the lead on projects. The pay is OK. It's not great, but it does pay the bills.

The publishing industry is repeatedly changing, and thus so does this company. You will be changing your process every so often due to various upgrades, best practices and personal changes.

    Cons

    You receive no job training.

The likelihood of a layoff is always there, and when it happens you may just get stuck with a former associates role. But don't think that you're going to get a pay increase, as that never happened.

Prepare to document, defend and refute bogus or inaccurate claims placed onto you.

They're constantly changing, and downsizing. Therefore, this isn't a place to look into a 10, 15 or 20 year career.

    Advice to Management

The CEO isn't really leading, she's more or less just sustaining till she can retire. The current office VP, in Lenexa, KS -- or whatever the title he's going by now is a great guy. He's smart, very knowledgeable, and I respect him very much. My personal recommendation is promote him to CEO, and completely redo the management structure. The whole hierarchy setup is in disarray and you have plenty of great talent just being wasted.

    Cons

Can't think of anything at this time

    Advice to Management

    Appreciate your staff.

I have been working at Vance Publishing part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The checks don't bounce and they mostly pay on time.

    Cons

Management treats employees like trash--they wad them up and throw them away. Periodically company goes through "restructuring," where higher-paid employees are let go because their positions are eliminated. A laggard when it comes to the digital age. They're kind of stuck in the 20th century and are being passed by their competitors. If you like to be disrespected, then this is the company for you. The Peter principle in action--managers are promoted to their level of incompetence. There's a reason why all of the good people are snatched up by competitors

    Advice to Management

There's a reason why Vance has a really bad rep with graduating students and perspective employees

Good reputation for brands in their respective markets. Friendly atmosphere among co-workers.

    Cons

Management doesn't communicate well with staff. Many legacy employees who can't/won't adapt to changing business environment
