I worked at Vancity (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    You meet some great people

    Cons

There was alot of favoritism and staff that worked hard and followed the Vancity philosophy were over looked.

    Advice to Management

Please allow the staff to do performance appraisal on their immediate supervisor and share with upper management. I was able to do that and voice my concerns and it made a big difference.

I have been working at Vancity full-time

    Pros

    - no high pressure sales targets
    - invested in giving back to the community
    - great work/life balance
    - decent pay
    - overall good staff

    Cons

    - no clear path to promotion
    - no variable pay except for profit share

    Advice to Management

Implement a career track for employees to follow. This will give us direction as to how to get promoted and will motivate us to achieve greater success. Right now the role feel like a dead end. No management positions, need to apply to analyst role to be considered into a Commercial AM role, no variable pay = no real incentive to smash sales targets, etc.

I worked at Vancity full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture and values are strong, and most people really believe in them with everything they have. Under managers there are really strong people who stay because of the values, but they really should be at higher positions based on merit.

    Cons

    - Too many special projects/groups that are the flavour of the month. I was on two of those teams that were short lived and dismantled because there was always some new direction that shifted the executive focus.
    - So many incompetent people promoted to Director and above, including people who have never had good 360 reviews and some who have never even led people before. People tend to move up based on what image they represent versus their skill or proven leadership
    - The executive team are 'yes' people and hardly ever champion the good work done underneath them, they just follow orders from the CEO and all others have gotten fired for not keeping their head down and obliging to an authoritarian style of leadership
    - Hardly anything is based on merit, you are either blocked from promotion due to maintain an image of fairness with others who do not perform as well or overlooked if you don't represent a particular image
    - Too much good work is wasted; so much effort goes into developing and implementing strategies that are only kiboshed or reversed by the next new strategy

    Advice to Management

For Vancity to thrive there needs to be new executives and most importantly a new CEO, plain and simple. That's the only way better leadership will trickle down.

I have been working at Vancity full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Strong work-life balance
    Excellent benefits and pension plan
Gives back to the community and it's members

    Cons

No real raises given, only a general wage increase which every employee receives. Does not matter what rating you receive in your performance review, all employees will receive the same "raise"

    Advice to Management

    Compensate staff based on performance

I have been working at Vancity full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Vancity has a reputation as being an excellent employer and providing groundbreaking service to the little guy, entrepreneurs and big businesses alike

    Cons

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
Please terminate managers who are manipulative and abusive. Some of them have been sued for harassment (and the plaintiff won). I've named them in previous surveys. You know who needs to go.

    Advice to Management

Terminate those managers that cause stress and grief amongst HO teams

    Vancity Response

    May 31, 2017 – Manager

Although it's really not possible to comment here on a hypothetical legal claim, we take accusations of harassment very seriously and investigate every claim thoroughly.

    I worked at Vancity full-time

    Pros

As a company they are well intentioned in terms of being community minded and working to create positive impact

    Cons

Lots of challenges as Vancity is trying to re-invent the way people work together and trying to clarify their strategies moving forward

    Advice to Management

Senior leadership need to do a better job of articulating the strategies and engaging the staff in the journey. Right now there is a lot of disconnect between senior leaders and front line staff.

I have been working at Vancity full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They provide a fairly competitive salary and decent a benefits package. Sales targets are not overly aggressive and so stress levels are manageable.

    Cons

Vancity has this idea of "exceptionalism" that we are so much better that other FI because we care about our members and our communities etc. It's tiring to hear it all the time. The big banks are not all that different from Vancity. another problem is that we hire/promote many people into management positions who have no relevant experience in the fields that they manage. In many positions you need to understand the technical skills of the job, but, it seems that is not the case for management.

    Advice to Management

It's time to hire some senior executives who have real and relevant banking or business management experience.
