    Pros

Great place to work and continues to live by their mandate of contributing to healthy communities.

    Cons

A lot of tenured staff that at some points can slow agility.

    Advice to Management

Invest in training and leadership for young staff.

    Pros

    Advancement is a bonus
    Make good money
Co-workers have been around for a while

    Cons

    Changed the system
Separate divisions so some people can be condescending

    Advice to Management

Need to help us deal with the change or at least keep us in the loop. It's happening too fast.

I worked at Vancity part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility was good expecially when I was going to uni at that time.
It was ok when it came to people.
The environment was stressful but any call center job is filled with raging customers waiting to hang up on you.

    Cons

    Rewards was slowly diminishing.
I could've moved up in the company but I didn't care because I got another job. I love my job now but if I stayed longer, I could see myself doing other things.

I worked at Vancity full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture and values are strong, and most people really believe in them with everything they have. Under managers there are really strong people who stay because of the values, but they really should be at higher positions based on merit.

    Cons

    - Too many special projects/groups that are the flavour of the month. I was on two of those teams that were short lived and dismantled because there was always some new direction that shifted the executive focus.
    - So many incompetent people promoted to Director and above, including people who have never had good 360 reviews and some who have never even led people before. People tend to move up based on what image they represent versus their skill or proven leadership
    - The executive team are 'yes' people and hardly ever champion the good work done underneath them, they just follow orders from the CEO and all others have gotten fired for not keeping their head down and obliging to an authoritarian style of leadership
    - Hardly anything is based on merit, you are either blocked from promotion due to maintain an image of fairness with others who do not perform as well or overlooked if you don't represent a particular image
    - Too much good work is wasted; so much effort goes into developing and implementing strategies that are only kiboshed or reversed by the next new strategy

    Advice to Management

For Vancity to thrive there needs to be new executives and most importantly a new CEO, plain and simple. That's the only way better leadership will trickle down.

    Pros

    Strong work-life balance
    Excellent benefits and pension plan
Gives back to the community and it's members

    Cons

No real raises given, only a general wage increase which every employee receives. Does not matter what rating you receive in your performance review, all employees will receive the same "raise"

    Advice to Management

    Compensate staff based on performance

    Cons

some crappy senior managers. Seriously, what criteria were employed?

    Advice to Management

some of your choice of VPs sends a confusing message, trim down the focus areas, exhaustion is real.

I have been working at Vancity full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, long term employment prospects, Co-workers are awesome, yearly education benefit, organization is in a change cycle so lots of interesting positions could be on the horizon

    Cons

Communication can be ambiguous, your experience at work depends entirely on how well your manager manages, some managers are very green and their staff suffer as a result.

    Advice to Management

Strategic information is rarely shared with non-management staff in a meaningful way (i.e. what's in it for me?). Information is shared on company intranet, but that means nothing if your direct manager hasn't read it or made an attempt to ensure everyone on their team is aware of it and understands it. A lot of important information stalls at the mid-manager level and never reaches lower staff. When you are too busy handling the day to day then you lose sight of the overall vision, and junior staff who are too busy don't even know that they should be looking to their manager for strategic information.

Thank you for your comment. As someone who works on the frontline, I can relate on some of your advice. The organization recognized that the right information getting shared is key and they invested... More

I have been working at Vancity full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Vancity has a reputation as being an excellent employer and providing groundbreaking service to the little guy, entrepreneurs and big businesses alike

    Cons

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
Please terminate managers who are manipulative and abusive. Some of them have been sued for harassment (and the plaintiff won). I've named them in previous surveys. You know who needs to go.

    Advice to Management

Terminate those managers that cause stress and grief amongst HO teams

    Vancity Response

    May 31, 2017 – Manager

Although it's really not possible to comment here on a hypothetical legal claim, we take accusations of harassment very seriously and investigate every claim thoroughly.
