    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Vancouver Public Schools part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was easy to get hired on as a sub, and I worked with many wonderfully competent teachers and paras for kids with special needs.

    Cons

Some substitute teachers were totally unqualified to handle special needs classrooms and let the kids go without schedules or guidance at all.
Once you're hired as a sub, you have to stay long enough at one school to get an administrator to recommend you. Good luck if you work exclusively short-term gigs or at a school where the administrator quits. If you find yourself in this spot, you're effectively *barred* from permanent employment till you can get an endorsement--even if you've got recommendations from teachers and former employers. Better not to sub at all if you know you're going for a permanent positions soon.

    Advice to Management

Include an "administrator approval" exception for people that subbed in short-term positions exclusively and/or have recommendations from teachers they worked with.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Vancouver Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Some good people to work with there. Great benefits.

    Cons

Poor leadership. Most employees work at a slow pace and don't have the skills required to complete their jobs. Training is weak at best.

    Advice to Management

Get better leadership in place. Establish formalized training. Encourage teamwork. Hold people accountable for job performance

    Pros

Great pay, hours, people, first job.

    Cons

Favoritism. Senior management has their favorites, and if you're not one of them you don't matter.

I have been working at Vancouver Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong administration and student morale. Campus is safe and students have opportunities for growth in various areas.

    Cons

Lots of red tape and changing policies to navigate through. Curriculum is not always connected to meet best needs of students.

    Advice to Management

Need to analyze changing technology environments and adapt teaching strategies to fit students.

I worked at Vancouver Public Schools part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, knowledgeable management and staff. Great place to work part time as a student because they are very flexible when it comes to scheduling.

    Cons

There aren't many Downsides other than the obvious fact that you need to either be a licensed teacher or a student currently enrolled in VPS to qualify for a majority of the jobs.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

    Pros

They provide multiple opportunities for professional development and care about student learning above all else. They are very supportive of their teachers.

    Cons

There is quite a bit of forced curriculum that is not necessarily the most effective for student learning. They do not give enough time for professional development

    Advice to Management

Give more non student attendance days to allow teachers time to prepare lessons and collect data to drive teaching to support student learning.

Current Employee - Paraprofessional in Vancouver, WA

    Pros

Better pay and benefits than other area districts.
Big district with ample transfer options.
Strong union that really does work for individual employee needs.
Most schools are fairly new and are clean working environments.

    Cons

Micromanagement by district administrators is too much sometimes. Its as if they don't think teachers and paraprofessionals are smart enough to teach little kids.

    Advice to Management

Trust in the intelligence of your instructional staff. Their creativity can produce better results than the latest shiny, new curriculum that you were duped into buying.
