I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My department has a great work life balance. We work in a team environment and are very supported by management; however we are lucky. It's my understanding that many departments are under staffed and over worked. Education and on the job training are unbeatable. Research enterprise is growing!!!

    Cons

    Too structured for innovation.

    Advice to Management

    incentivize

I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Prestige and benefits-love the education opportunities such as intro to research. The HR department is also excellent; I've never had an issue with a paycheck.

    Cons

Easy to get overworked-lots of overtime necessary to get the job done. Many of the institution goals and resources are for clinicians and not administrators.

    Pros

Vanderbilt provided me with the opportunity to work in a clinical pharmacy setting and provided me with my first full time job.

    Cons

Have to pay almost $40 a month to park. Vanderbilt on average pays very poorly.

I worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Amazing co-workers and good benefits. The tuition assistance program was the best benefit for me. I left and took a job making twice the pay I would have if I remained at Vanderbilt.

    Cons

You have to pay to park at work. There's no excuse for that. If you park in the wrong place you are fined $100. If you don't pay, your car is booted. Vanderbilt was the lowest paying hospital in Nashville and benefits were being cut rapidly before I left, including the tuition benefit. Unit managers were quitting in droves around 2011-2013 and high profile physicians were being unceremoniously shown the door.

The bottom line is that this is an extremely wealthy university/medical center that has allowed an enormous disconnect to develop between the workers and those in power.

    Advice to Management

You're sucking the life out of some wonderful people. Many of your employees hang in there because they need the benefits and love doing what they are doing. You at the top have little, if anything at all to do with how things are operating at the level where the rubber meets the road.

Develop some genuine care for your employees.

Seriously, you were building a new medical center and paying obscene salaries to executives at the same time you were taking the hatchet to employee benefits because times were hard.

    Pros

Environment of excellence. Very good benefits. Working at an institution that values questioning the processes and tries to implement those to the benefit of patients and staff.

    Cons

Nothing to do with VUMC, just dealing with the traffic to ultimately get to work. Would recommend more ways to make employees feel a part of such a large place.

    Advice to Management

Don't make your employees pay to park. I paid $60/month and the garage was .5 mile from my office. Factor it in to the job offer, or set up an account.
