    Pros

-Excellent resources for researchers in general. -Excellent and well organized Ph.D. program with strong leadership. -Lots of high quality research at Vanderbilt. -Graduate student stipend is quite good for the cost of living in Nashville, at least as far as graduate student stipends go... -Exceptional career development program for graduate students, arguably one of the best I've ever seen.

    Cons

-While most graduate advisers are at least adequate, some are downright awful and have no respect for their students, be very careful who you choose as your mentor/graduate adviser. -Graduate student benefits leave a lot to be desired. -Generally speaking, the quality of the university upper management and administration has declined in the recent past. -For most labs, work/life balance does not exist if you are a graduate student.

    Pros

You get to meet folks from all over the world and when you love meeting people it's a win-win!

    Cons

People in leadership positions can't and won't be disciplined even when you have proof and witnesses against them! Discrimination and Bullying on a corporate level!

    Pros

The teams are tight-knit in clinical areas and supportive of one another.

    Cons

Leadership is very disconnected from the reality of the everyday struggles to provide care in the Children's hospital.

Say goodbye to your own health and wellness when you work here

    Pros

Generous PTO (if you can take off)

    Cons

Work/life balance non-existant. When you do well, management attempts to crush you with unsustainable amounts of work with no support. Unhealthy environment where all employees are afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation. Unempathetic management that are not interested in making changes for the better (although engagement is a continuous discussion. They haven't got a clue. No room for growth in some departments unless upper leadership tags you as a favorite. No desire to promote people because they are satisfied providing crushing/detrimental amounts of work on their staff. More concerned with numbers/metrics than the people that work for them. In my time here I have seen numerous people have heart attacks, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety problems and more just because they cannot meet management expectation of workloads.

    HealthIT

    Pros

There is some work/life balance. The staff works hard and really cares about their jobs.

    Cons

HealthIT Leadership does not value their employees. Since Epic implementation we are no longer allowed to work from home. No communication within department. Pay is low. Pay increases are nominal and usually only cover increased benefit costs. It is a good ole boys club with most leadership coming from Biomedical Informatics Program regardless of their experience. This leaves no room for anyone else to move up the chain. PMO is the worst managed department with absolutely no leadership.

Many Pros & Cons - Academic & Research Enterprise - Contracts & Grants Administration

Jan 25, 2022 - Senior Financial Analyst in Nashville, TN
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Ample PTO & decent health insurance

    Cons

Very high turnover in the area that I worked with. The Director was very divisive, gossiped about staff, and pitted one employee against another. Do your research - if there's been high turnover in the area you're interested in, run the other way. General lack of leadership and not a lot of mentors in this area to look up to. Also, pay is poor compared to the Nashville Metro area for comparable jobs.
