    The only game in town...mostly.

    Pros

Cutting edge research; supportive, collaborative environment; tons of research resources; the best place to do biomedical and biotech research in Nashville (and one of the best in the Southeast)

    Cons

Academic research is a very challenging field; Vanderbilt as an institution has little loyalty to researchers or research staff - if they don't bring in their own funding, they don't get paid; research perspectives are driven by the medical center's very traditional medical-centric vision; traditional academic research is going to change immeasurably in the next 5-10 years; huge pay gaps between basic science (PhD) researchers and clinical (MD) researchers - this seems universal, but a challenge, nonetheless.

    Pros

The experience of level 1 trauma

    Cons

Pay for parking, which is miles away. Annual evaluations are ridiculous. Attitude of staff is pretentious and very hard to fit in. Very clique’y. Break room has segregated tables, divided by service- there’s no overall team work atmosphere. You will walk 8 miles a day to get supplies unless you are assigned to a service. Management is never around to help. Security is more concerned with giving out parking tickets than maintaining your safety in parking garages.

    Pros

Benefits, PTO excellent. Match 401k; 1-5 yr staff have 29 PTO days (incl. sick & 7 holidays).

    Cons

Turnover causes staff to be overworked consistently for years; expected to work long hours. Expensive or remote parking. Low pay compared to market.

    Mostly a good experience.

Aug 9, 2013 - Administrative Assistant in Nashville, TN

    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are a lot of dedicated, loyal employees working at the Medical Center. The patients and the good work we know we are doing make it a good place to work.

    Cons

Some staff are underused and unappreciated. Not everyone is treated fairly or equally. Very top heavy. A great deal of duplication of functions between departments and non communication between those departments.

They don't pay near enough to live and work in Nashville.

    Pros

Pros are great medical care (if you stay in-house).

    Cons

Senior Management is out of touch with the costs of living today and the morale of staff. Doctors face almost no resistance or disciplinary action here. They can abuse anyone under them and say anything they want. It's a bit demeaning at times.
