    What a disappointment

    Dec 5, 2022 - Communications-related

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Interesting work, nice co-workers (mostly), always learning about new research coming from faculty (a plus if you're a nerd and a lifelong learner), nice facilities (depending on the building you work in), sometimes interesting events to attend. Once you get in, it's fairly easy to move laterally around the university in various position. - software, equipment, and tech is up to speed; you can get IT issues solved fairly quickly

    Cons

    - salary is very low for the experience required for the role and compared to peer universities (I was new to higher ed when I started, so I had no idea how bad it was) - just because this is an R1 university, doesn't mean the entire university, its culture, or its employees (the staff) are progressive and open-minded. the teams I worked with were surprisingly homogenous and traditional. Some of them did not want to try new ideas, even if you could prove they would be more effective than what they were currently doing. - benefits are a joke. you can only choose from Aetna (terrible insurance company) and the coverage is paltry. this is partly a function of being in TN, a regressive place. - very difficult to move up in your career. some staff have overstayed their effectiveness in their positions, so you're stuck where you are until they die or retire, or management realizes they need to create a new position - Whatever DEI efforts they're doing are a joke. It's all performative. I really hope the students of color have a full ride because it doesn't make sense to attend the university otherwise, unless they themselves are conservative. - nobody likes the Chancellor, except the donors and the board of trustees - fairly high turnover. reasons vary, but overall that's never a good sign for any organization.

    Pros

Great flexibility. Meaningful work. Sense of community.

    Cons

Some of the executive leadership pretends to care about fairness, equity, your wellbeing, and trust you to perform but in the end they want what they want regardless of how feasible it is. Your value only exists as long as you keep the executives happy.
