    Pros

Vanguard offers great benefits. These include 401k, profit-sharing plan, medical benefits & generous time off. They also offer decent training for people who have no industry experience.

    Cons

I compare Vanguard to working for the government. Given the huge number of workforce, advancement is slow and beareucratic. The pay is mediocre to start, rises to mediocre mid-career, and tops out mediocrely.

    Advice to Management

They should seek to allow individuals to advance more quickly based on personal performance and not place long time-in-job requirements across the board.

    Pros

Working hours, younger staff are interesting and give the office a good vibe.

    Cons

Pay doesn't compare to other top tier fund managers. Older staff are their for life and are happy being mediocre.

    Advice to Management

Pay inline with other top tier fund managers, otherwise the good people will leave for those firms.

I have been working at Vanguard Investments Australia full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you want an easy job for life and have zero ambition, they are like the public sexto of finance.
    Good young and skilled workforce.
They will look after you with this regards self development, I.e external training courses.
Bonus structure is good, but only after 6 full years of being permanent.

    Cons

Easy to get in there at entry level. But once in, they have changed of late and don't seem to promote internal hires for promotions as much as they used to. They have their class favourites, and those people don't tend to be the team players.
A lack of real proper structured onboarding for all employees, new and internal moves.
If you are not permanent, you will feel a real divide between you and the permanent employees. Bonuses, options for courses etc is very obvious.
Not a very progressive or fast paced company to work for. Great ideas, but take far too long to implement due to lack of technology. The technology is shocking.

    Advice to Management

Improve bonus structure. Not fair on employees who have been there years, but only permanent x years and do not qualify for 6+ years bonus.
Be more transparent with future plans.
Bring back social events with beverages. Nobody is appreciative of a rare but mid week event.
Promote regular team functions as moral is slowly slipping currently to low levels.
Develop a proper structured on boarding to help people feel connected to the organisation and will allow them to be sufficiently trained to start their job.

    Pros

Stable company with a good reputation in the industry. Benefits start from day one including 401k.

    Cons

Very low pay. Not a great place to start a mid-career change. Employees very young and seem to be favored over older employees. Very mundane phone job. I would think this would be a decent job for someone in the twilight of their career that just needs the benefits and (low) pay. Seems like a good place to jump start a career and build a resume.

    Advice to Management

Think about getting rid of some of the overlapping staff. Most of us are just sitting around browsing the web.

    Pros

This is a great place to work if you are just starting out and want to work your way up.
If you have the initiative and are willing to relocate, you can eventually do well though the salaries are low.

    Cons

    Low pay.
    somewhat redundant work
no opportunity for performance based bonus or commissions.

    Advice to Management

Give employees more financial incentives to do well and to stay with the company.

    Pros

Vanguard is secure, easy, stress free, and pays fairly.

    Cons

Once you hit a ceiling you can only advance into management which is a maze of beauracracy. Filled with favoritism.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes. Figure out what people want, and your not fooling anyone when you say "this is what you said you wanted", when trying to position a new idea.

    Pros

    Great environment
    Great training
    Great job security
Good place for a college student
    Great resume builder
    Really good retirement benefits

    Cons

Not a lot of opportunity to move up in the ranks
Duties of the job become repetitive and boring if you need variety

    Advice to Management

Make more opportunities for promotions and pay increases. Management shouldn't be so hard on they're workers. Entry level position should be at a higher salary

I worked at Vanguard Investments Australia full-time

    Pros

Learned a lot about investing and about the kinds of things a company can do to make the work environment a more appealing place. Also what they shouldn't do.

    Cons

I didn't make a lot of money because the company doesn't value the skills of an experienced phone rep from the States

Current Employee - Processing Associate in Malvern, PA
    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Status and reputation of the company, looks good on resume.

    Cons

Low pay, understaffed (each staff member must do the work of about 2-3 people), files piled up the ceiling with angry customers who have been waiting for their issues to be resolved, but not enough staff (Vanguard is too cheap to hire an adequate number of people), antiquated DOS record keeping system that breaks down and even senior staff cannot resolve issues, unreasonable production demands, unfair method of calculating performance.

    Advice to Management

Devise fair methods of calculating performance where complex and problem issues receive more weight than simple transactions like changing a client's address. Get updated computer system and do away with DOS. Provide adequate, hands-on training instead of coma-inducing lecture-based training.
