I worked at Vanguard full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They are a jump start company, do not plan on growing with them to much.

    Cons

You can not believe what they tell you. They do not care about the truth because if they did they would not believe hearsay. However they do, Or should I say the people that work the hardest are problems for trying to dot the i's and cross the T's people they continuous have no clue to the job after a year are rewarded.

    Advice to Management

Tell the truth, and be forth coming with employees

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good 401k plan, ok pay, paid time off, benefits. However, these benefits have gotten progressively worse since I started at the company. One pro that keeps getting repeated is the mission, but keep in mind that the low cost for clients comes out of the lower level workers' salaries. Management still gets bonuses in the millions of dollars.

    Cons

Very few career opportunities that aren't a variation on the same entry-level phone job. Management likes to claim that's career pathing, but its pretty apparently that there is little room for growth outside of call center jobs.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your crew, come up with better opportunities, fire low performers - they exist at all levels but there's plenty hiding in management.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, leave compensation, tuition assistance $9k per year. 10% of salary contributed to 401k each year but not fully vested until 6 years.

    Cons

Middle managers (VADP) are destroying the company. It is every seasoned professionals worst nightmare to have a young ,inexperienced manager with no real "leadership" experience, live out her learning curve at your expense. I am basically teaching (the hard way) my leader to lead and not manage. She has zero people skills and covers up her lack of professionalism by "talking the talk". If this is your fear DO NOT COME TO VANGUARD!

Systems and processes are a nightmare for clients. It is remarkable that they stay with us like they do with how severe the errors are.

    Advice to Management

Have a long hard look at statements regarding your leadership choices in these reviews. Until there is an epiphany and action is taken, seasoned professionals like myself with find it extremely easy to move clients away from Vanguard once I have obtained the designation currently in progress and work for a competitor.

    I worked at Vanguard full-time

    Pros

Good PTO, benefits, work life balance

    Cons

    Everything else is a joke

    Advice to Management

Worst place to work in the industry. Treat your employees with respect and find ways to make them like their job.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Everyone is very nice, there is a good culture and leaders have a positive attitude
    - If you are patient, there is supposedly room for advancement... to another phone role
    - generous PTO for an entry level position (but you cannot just use it whenever you want, it must be approved by the computer system first)

    Cons

    - They force you to work the late shift in Arizona, and advertise 'flex time' as an opportunity to get off early, but 'flex time' is rarely available so you are forced to use PTO
    - The work is mind numbing: You are constantly taking one call after another, talking to clients that don't even know what a mutual fund is or how to get onto the internet.
    - Computer system monitors EVERYTHING you do. When you log in, how long you're on a call, how long you spend after a call (can only be 1 minute max), what you say, break time, lunch time... it is the epitome of micro managing
    - You are constantly tied to the phone, a minute off feels like a piece of heaven
    - People in VADP,the accelerated development program have it made, but the freedom in their schedule and opportunity for advancement is just unfair to other people with the same qualifications
    - the salary is low and high "engagement" scores are inaccurate
    - they don't wave your 1 year time-in-job... one whole year is a long time to be a telemarketer

    Advice to Management

Do my job for a month, day in, day out. Stick to the late shift, adherence, and only 1 hour off the phone per week (to talk to your boss) then lets see how "engaged" you are. Throw some 30 minute lunches in there and you'll have a real party!

I worked at Vanguard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I like what they stand for. Good benefits. Thirty-seven and a half hour work week. Ten percent contribution to retirement plan.

    Cons

They have more business than they can handle. They like to put college grads into lower management positions because they do as they're told and don't ask questions.

    Advice to Management

Put managers in place who actually have some experience and know the role. You can't lead people in a role that you don't understand.

I worked at Vanguard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It was a first rate company. Client focus and employee focus, wanting the best for all.

    Cons

In the later years the company cared less about the employees and the service suffered because of it. Vanguard can't keep up with the demands of clients and seems like they don't really care. Management seems to promote inexperienced people who don't know how to manage. Inept people in management positions who don't have that real care about clients.

    Advice to Management

You've never listen to the people who have gotten you to where you are. It seems it's just a matter of time. Clients all say that you've grown too big for your pants.

I have been working at Vanguard as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are no pros to this job.

    Cons

One of the biggest downside to Vanguard is their hiring process. It all depends if you are lucky enough to get a supervisor that is not extremely strict with the process.

    Advice to Management

Change the way associates are hired and go back to only hiring directly and not using a temp agency.

I worked at Vanguard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are no pros whatsoever to having PTSD due to workplace bullying and discrimination. The pro is that they are finally being exposed for the horrific tactics utilized for their many discriminatory practices against many current and ex employees.

    Cons

5 STAR REVIEWS ARE LIES. Let's review the 5 star reviews and demonstrate the pattern of lying:

    - 5 star reviews have very few "helpful" clicks' unless brown nosing management had a clique-meeting and decided to write and like each others' 5 star reviews.

    - 5 star reviews are either written by 'team leaders,' HR, or brand new college-to-corporate recruits. Notice how the newbies often add 'n/a' to the 'cons', typical tenure of these types of reviews: 1-2 years unless a manager or HR robot.

    - 5 star reviews are either too vague, or the reviews appear to be either coached, or copied and pasted straight from the Official Koolaid Brigade Script.

Now, let's review the 1-2 star reviews:

    - Every one of these reviews have double and triple-digit "helpful" clicks.

    - you cannot vote more than once on a review.

    - you cannot 'like' your own review.

    - there is a very disturbing pattern to what is being said in the 'cons' section, primarily regarding age and FMLA discrimination, favoritism, clueless newbies straight outta college fast-tracked into management positions of which they have NO business nor experience.

    - Vanguard has much lower scores than their biggest competitors on Glassdoor.

    - there are many, many true references to websites that expose the discrimination that goes on at Vanguard.

    - there is a pattern of 'managing out' older employees or anyone who asks too many questions.

    - there are countless lawsuits filed against Vanguard by ex employees, and that number is increasing, including more whistleblower suits.

    - EVERYONE KNOWS THAT HR AND MANAGEMENT ARE TRYING THEIR BEST TO SKEWER THEIR RATINGS ON GLASSDOOR, AND WE ARE ON TO YOU. Do you know how I learned about Glassdoor? An incompetent manager told us all to not leave negative reviews. Which leads me to:

    Typical 3 star review:

    - current employee who JUST learned about Glassdoor, most likely from their managers telling them to sign up and give glowing reviews (they used to say, 'don't write negative reviews.')

    - signs up on Glassdoor, leaves a neutral, 3 star review, very brief and very vague, in order to access ALL of the reviews.

    - eventually gets fed up, once targeted, and rewrites the review and exposes more of the truth.

    - seriously, in 2017, do you REALLY think that people would trash their employer in Glassdoor unless there was too much truth in what they're saying? THINK ABOUT IT...

Vanguard, all of your questionable and illegal practices are being exposed, you cannot hide from the truth forever. Your glory days are behind you now. You are a disgusting, evil, horrible company and I believe you are being led by cult members. I am so, so glad that you continue to be investigated by many federal agencies charged with overseeing your business practices. So, so relieved that they are on to you.

Oh, and the "talent list" is not a myth. You are marked for your entire Vanguard career in your first year, no matter how much you learn and evolve. They tell you to learn and grow and blah blah blah, but if your first incompetent manager doesn't like you, you might as well start looking for a new job, BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO MOVE FORWARD, YOU WILL BE DENIED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. Do not let evil Vanguard destroy your livelihood out of pure spite and favoritism. Don't stick around and get Stockholm Syndrome. SAVE YOURSELVES!

    Advice to Management

    Dear Vanguard,

    Enjoy some more red Koolaid!

    Sincerely,
    Jim Jones

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are fantastic and could retain talent if management wasn't so bad.
401k benefits are second to few.
Career opportunities are available if you do not speak out about the very real issues impacting the clients and organizations

    Cons

I have never seen a company lose more TOP talent than I have seen Vanguard lose in the past year. When I say top talent I mean double digit tenure and senior advisors/administrators who simply could no longer tolerate a mid 20year old micro manager whose insecurities and self serving approach prove their inability to lead.

These managers simply do an excellent job "talking the talk"
    .
Work life balance is non-existent IF you want to meet work load expectations. Even self driven motivated top tier professionals putting in 50+ hours per week cannot keep up.

Flagship has become nothing more than a sweat shop call center with little to no engagement. The stress can be felt throughout the floor.

Resources / business partners / technology and processing is worse than the press they are getting. It is a nightmare if you are client facing.

    Advice to Management

Have a leadership vewtting process that is able to descern beyond the verbal strategy of your inexperienced managers before you have the lead seasoned professionals and lose excellent talent to you competition. This is a serious threat to the future of Vanguard. Quite simply VADP managers suck! But you don't have to take my word for it, inevitably you will see the demise.
