I have been working at Vanguard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Company paid for and trained following items: Series 7, 63, 52. Willing to pay for: CFP, CFA, tuition reimbursement, graduate degree, overtime bonus pay. Big on education and development. Encourage up and out movement. Minimal watercooler drama. Never have to take work home.

    Cons

Only 3 private campus so locations to work are limited. Need to be at office to complete work. No store-fronts can be difficult for clients especially deaf/blind. Fully vested at 6 years.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work at listening to the crew recommendations. Greater flexibility with scheduling can only enhance the crew experience.

I worked at Vanguard as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1) You are surrounded by people who want to see you succeed.
    2) Incoming calls and no sales is a big relief.
    3) As long as you take your teaching opportunities to heart and show them you are trying hard to succeed, you can move up very quickly(within 6 months)
    4) Keep a few performance metric that are all based on time spent on the phone. They seem impossible to meat but within a few weeks I was all green.

    Cons

    1) Training is intense, fortunately, support leads and the information database is a huge resource.
    2) no vacation time as a contractor
    3) It is a digital platform supported by call centers, some of the older generation have trouble understanding computers. The occasional long call helping the elderly change passwords or set up a username can be frustrating

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Every crew member gets a bonus regardless of tenure or pay grade.

    14% 401(k) match.

Paid holidays + 18 PTO days, with the ability to buy more PTO days with paycheck deductions.

    Countless opportunities for growth.

Regularly scheduled team building events outside of work, catered lunches on occasion.

    Cons

Leadership is amazing, but most are only leaders, and do not know much about the actual tasks of the department they are leading.

    Advice to Management

Hire tenured crew members into leadership that know the ins and outs of the role they are leading.

I worked at Vanguard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Great working environment
    Great people
Rarely expected to work over time.

    Cons

    Low pay
    Lack of opportunities for advancement
Employees are treated like expendable pieces of machinery

    Advice to Management

Raise salaries, abolish the VADP program. Get back to what made you great in the first place: Keeping your employees happy. This include paying them a wage that, at the very least, keeps up with inflation.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Since its founding, Vanguard has held true to a simple mission, to take a stand for all investors, to treat them fairly, and to give them the best chance at investment success. I joined after six years of consulting, thinking I would be here for only a couple of years before moving on to bigger and better things. 16 years later and I am still here, working along >15k other friends who are equally passionate about making a difference and doing so with the highest ethics and character.

    Cons

We are a very rational workforce, and data is critical in ensuring we are on track to achieving our objectives. At times, our "left brained" approach can overshadow the emotional nature necessary to create a highly engaging environment.

    Advice to Management

Continue to lean into our core purpose, and continue the momentum built towards achieving our aspiration of being the best place to work on the planet.

I worked at Vanguard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As others have said, a GREAT resume builder. It can be tough getting your foot in the door in the securities industry, and Vanguard is just low-paying enough that it doesn't attract all that many people. If you can afford the record-breaking lows in terms of industry compensation, stick out a year for your licenses and book it.

Lots of folks will list this as a 'con,' but Vanguard's culture really does come off as inclusive, friendly, and caring. The company promotes this happy, feel-good kinda hugbox that pushes even the most curmudgeonly people into being supportive and affable. Benefits are top-notch, and a good deal of your co-workers are going to be kind and thoughtful. Really lovely people were working at the Scottsdale location when I worked there. This includes some of the management, too; some of the team leaders are absolute assets to the company.

The operational issues with Vanguard are so glaring it is incredibly easy to convince my clients with assets in Vanguard to defect.

The investment products and funds Vanguard has to offer are some of the industry's best. John Bogle is an absolute genius. McNabb's kind of a twerp.

    Cons

Compensation is pitiful. Recognition of work of any caliber is hard to come by. Employees who are top performers get their name published in an e-bulletin board (and maybe even a Harkins movie pass for two!). Employees who are poor performers/just plain incompetent are kept on payroll.
All employees are kept in the dark.

There are managers and associates in literally every department who have absolutely no goddamn idea what they're doing, even after years of being in that department. It would be incredible if it weren't so sad.

    Advice to Management

Full disclosure here: I believe Vanguard is an amazing company, and its accomplishments are incredible. I really wanted to keep working with it and see it grow, hopefully one day watch my own suggestions and systems contribute to its success.
That being said, let your associates grow. Make the ladder more obvious and provide more incentive to climb that ladder.
