Great Benefits and 401k. You don't take work home with you and always just work until your shift ends.
Cons
You will be taking 40+ calls a day.

Good First Job Within the Finance Industry
Jan 23, 2016 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great health benefits. Great 401k match and pension payout. Mid year partnership is based on fund performance and is often higher than the base bonus payment. Exempt employees receive year end bonus based on performance Most supervisors you report to directly will fight for you in most situations. I would recommend this company to a friend if it was their first job in the financial sector or someone seeking great health benefits. There is a lot of training for their new hires which is extremely beneficial for their new role and any role they move to in the future.
Cons
Recent restructuring has moved 2000+ exempt employees to non-exempt roles, taking away year end bonuses. This means OT eligibility but the OT must be approved which doesn't happen unless the overall business needs OT hours. Not as transparent as they say they are. Meaning they will tell you one thing and then if you ask why or any question that requires more information to be divulged, they say they don't have that information and never get back to you with the answer, even if they say they do. Granted this is mostly with upper management and not your reporting supervisor. Short lists held by upper management. Meaning if you're not on this list it is extremely difficult for you to move up in the company.

You don't need to work at an Investment Company to learn about Investing
Jun 20, 2021 - Client Relationship Specialist in Malvern, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The company will pretty much hire, train, and supply you with everything you need. (Finance background was not needed for this role. ) Your working for one of the best Mutual Fund Companie in the world and some people will call just to say they love Vanguard. Managers were always really nice to employees as they have all been there. Pretty great benefits and flexible Paid-Time-Off Work/Life Balance was fair
Cons
You are constantly taking call after call. With very little breaks. Your were expected to start talking calls he moment of your start time, you get a hour and a half for lunch and break, then right back to the grind until punch out. Mandatory over-time was not uncommon. Career Advancement was very slow. Personally, I didnt like all the rules for internal hiring. You have to spend at least a year as a fully licensed rep, before being able to apply for new positions. Very fast pace, when call volumes were high with little support. At times, I felt like I was left to solve a clients issue all on my own with very little guidance. Very little interaction with your Team at least remotely and honestly no one was exited to work together. Our conversations mostly involved discussing metrics and KPIs. The biggest issue for the company is that they are making sure a huge push for digital pathways as the only option when so many clients are far into their elderly years (don't have a computer or trust them) but we are expected to cloax them into using one or saying we can't do it at all.

Corporate culture with lack pf passion for investing
Dec 18, 2013 - Participant Services in Scottsdale, AZRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Vanguard has a great 401k and good benefits for employees. The people that work at Vanguard also are a strong positive.
Cons
Mediocre pay. Corny corporate culture. There is a real lack of passion for investing. Most of the people are just there because it's a job. it seems like it's a good place to start a career in finance, but if you want to be paid what you are worth you will have to leave after you get some experience. The prevailing sentiment that I hear is people just wanting to get fully vested in the 401k and then leave. There seems to be a high amount of turnover.

Retirement Plan Services Representative

Great benefits and PTO. Co-workers are friendly and always willing to help.
Cons
Phones are tough to handle on a daily basis. You have to find your happy place to keep your sanity.

An excellent place to start a career, with job security during turbulent times.
Jan 11, 2009 - Brokerage Associate in Scottsdale, AZRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The best thing about Vanguard is the job security even in turbulent market conditions and the ability to have a life outside of the firm. The company had great benefits and prestige about it unmatched in the financial industry due to their ethical treatment of customers.
Cons
While Vanguard treats their customers with respect and dignity this is not always the case with their employees. Raises and promotions were often given based on non-contribution related items such as popularity and school ties. Intelligence had nothing to do with promotions as most of their intelligent employees seemed to leave for other companies once they had some experience under their belts for better positions.

Good Start to Your Career (don't expect anything else)
Sep 14, 2019 - Personal Investor in Scottsdale, AZRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great start out of school to get your exams out of the way and a foot in the door. Great health insurance with an on site Nurse Practitioner Good PTO (but competitive PTO offered elsewhere despite what they may tell you) There is zero shame in taking PTO and using your full balance
Cons
- Manipulation: given this is a lot of people's first job out of college. Management grooms employees into thinking Vanguard is their best and almost only option. They lie and say the job is competitive to other employers, however, do not fall for this notion. There are MANY great employers outside of Vanguard that offer same if not better benefits. -After you pass your 7 & 63, there is no more knowledge that is acquired. (My advice is to sign up for your CFA or CFP on your own ASAP after the exams to continue your own self-development because you will not get it through the job; expensive but worth it in the end; don't wait to be 'accepted' into their corporate programs) -Poor Management: Management is run by 24-30 year olds who, except for a handful, are more worried about their dating life within the company and can be some of the biggest gossips. It creates a very unique and odd work environment reminiscent of a high school clique. -Micro-management: While interviewing at other companies, it was a huge laughing point that there is a literal button you have to push to use the restroom at Vanguard. It is quite ridiculous to treat adults in such a way; additionally management is instructed to be very strict regarding the usage of this button -False Promises: Management lies and promises positions/responsibilities to employees for years to string them along in order to ensure employees do not leave the company. (This happened numerous times to numerous people and once you start you will hear story after story just like this) -ATTN New Employees: Vanguard is going through its' biggest reorganization in its' history. They have been very honest about the rough road that lies ahead while everything calms down. While this is occurring there is essentially a hiring freeze internally, where people are required to do another year within their job they were assigned during the restructuring. Due to the current lack of movement, be prepared for a long road ahead to move up in the company if you choose to stay as there will be many people that will be posting out to other positions at the exact same time. -Company is not run on merit, positions are awarded completely based on if someone has (for the lack of a better term) sucked up to management enough. -Additionally, new employees keep in mind despite how they may sell you the job...with the new reorganization you will be changing passwords and addresses for at least 6 months. Do NOT expect any financial development or you will be very disappointed. My overall advice if you are looking to move up in the finance industry: be grateful for your first job out of college, take the exams to build your resume, do not have a complacent mindset (or you will get stuck there), sign up for your CFP or CFA ASAP, start interviewing at other companies about 4 months before your 1 year mark, and then leave on or shortly after your 1 year mark as anything shorter looks terrible on your resume.

Working at Vanguard
Aug 25, 2009 - Client Relationship Associate in Scottsdale, AZRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great training and learning environment. Benefits are great; 401k and insurance.
Cons
Constantly being monitored on the phones. The pay is mediocre at best. Job gets to be repetitive and not a challenge. Movement within the company is usually lateral and doing the same job: on the phone just slightly different information being regurgitated.

Good Starter Job

They have a lot of good benefits and the retirement plans for employees are great.
Cons
They make you think it is not a call center, but it is. They pay less than their competitors.
