I worked at Varco Pruden Buildings full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Clean, safe work environment. Flexible work hours. Easy access to office facility. Structured vacation schedule. Usual paid holidays typical in corporate situation.

    Cons

Due to acquisition by corporation also owning greatest competitor, illogical business model established pitting two separate sales teams & operations groups competing directly against each other, while sharing manufacturing plant resources. Parent company made no plan for meshing two adversarial cultures resulting in even greater combative internal struggle. Two multi-decade customer bases left to fight out arising issues while company insisting upon loyalty to each individual brand. Employees of two companies chewed up in the process.

    Advice to Management

Merge two companies into one cohesive entity. Discontinue practice of maintaining competing sales forces. Enhance resulting customer base with realized savings from consolidation. Truly place customers at highest priority to save flailing business, increase investors' return after extended period of poor performance.

    Pros

The industry is doing well and should rebound over next two-three years. Good geographic mix of locations and opportunities for transfer, while rare, are still available. Seems to be more movement from divisions to headquarters than among the production facilities.

    Cons

Competition between VP vanguard and Butler folks. Still one moving as one company, and the customers sense it, with many having found better relationships with the Nucor or NCI companies

    Advice to Management

Compete with the industry, not your sister brands and divisions. Avoid the slippery slope of the spoke and wheel approach to manufacturing and service.

I have been working at Varco Pruden Buildings full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Benefits, decent pay, nice office (but in a high rent district area)) which could help employees get a bonus if rent wasn't so high.

    Cons

Very poor management in the Greensboro, NC office which has caused very low employee morale.

    Advice to Management

Most of the manager's at Greensboro, NC VP office manage with their emotions. If they are in a good mood one day, then everything is okay. If they are in a bad mood, it reflects in their attitude toward the employees. Managers at VP have too many "favorite" people who they like to associate with. If you aren't on their "favorites" list, you know what list you fall under. They have only two.

    Pros

People are really nice. The senior engineers are willing to help and train younger engineers. Management is fair. Work is pretty interesting

    Cons

Location, Location, Location. The company seems always in flux. The working environs are a little outdated. Software used is proprietary.

    Advice to Management

Provide stability to the workers, try to disperse the atmosphere of people always fearing for their jobs. Use industry standard software, especially for drafting.
