    Pros

Smart people, good working environment, good facilities. Still a good company to work for. Friendly people. Generally good moral compass. Strong values. Market leader.

    Cons

Not as fun to work now the days of double digit growth have gone. Varian has lost the family appeal it once had. More of a cost cutting model. Job/career development program is in its infancy. Salaries low for bay area.

    Advice to Management

Develop a mentoring program for better knowledge transfer. Develop career planning process. Bring back some of the family culture.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy to stand out (just a little extra effort to be noticed).
Management is available but they do not 'hoover'.
    Benefits package.

    Cons

The work instructions are convoluted and outdated.
The engineering team's instructions often contradict work instructions.
Production equipment is dire need of upgrades.
Starting pay is $12.48 / hr. (Mc Donald's near my house starts at $12.00).

    Advice to Management

Invest in equipment upgrades. Short term outlook on profits has impeded necessary upgrades in equipment. There seems to be a all around 'spend a dollar to save a penny' attitude.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time

    Pros

It is easy to take pride in working on the best radiation therapy product in the world.

    Cons

Service is consistently understaffed. Management sells contracts for support past 9PM and has coverage only until 5PM all over. The demands and expectations grow every day. When asked for help, the answer is always work harder. They talk a moderate game about work/life balance but have no true intentions to help provide it.

    Advice to Management

Stop selling contracts that you can't handle with your manpower levels. Hire more service engineers to handle the workloads to reduce the stress and improve morale. You will have much better luck with longevity of employees.
