I worked at Varian Medical Systems (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Culture, training, coworkers, benefits, and technology

    Cons

Work-life balance. Base pay is low with the promise of overtime. No loyalty from management, especially in the southern region. Once you get on the regional director's bad side, there's no recovery; he preaches grace but doesn't practice it.

    Advice to Management

Be loyal to the long-term employees. They deserve more support than to be put out to pastor just because VMS is looking for a way to reduce salary costs. You've lost too many good employees in the last 4 years.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time

    Pros

Despite being a big company, it's not hard to get to know people at all as everyone's really friendly. As an entry level employee, I don't feel intimidated to interact with c-level execs and it's a great place to gain experience.

    Cons

As an older company some processes within the business are outdated.

    Cons

    Opportunity for advancement is limited.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems (Less than a year)

    Pros

Got experience working with clients firsthand
Got very real work experience under a tech lead and independently
Lots of fun activities organized for interns, such as a baseball game and BBQs
    Management was very embracing

    Cons

Divided team, half of our development team was located in Germany
Took approximately a week to get settled in

    Advice to Management

Know who and when interns are ready to start and prepare their tasks in advance. Maybe layout a schedule for their duration at the company.

"Great Benefits - Poor Work-Life Balance"

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits! 401k Matching, Strong Medical, Dental, and Vision options, Education Reimbursement. Many employees are remote so being located in Palo Alto, CA, Milpitas, CA, or Las Vegas, NV is not necessarily required (depending on your role).

    Cons

They talk a lot about work-life balance, but salaried employees are "expected" to be available 24/7. Travel policies are antiquated (ex. regardless of your level in the company, you are not allowed to ever book Business Class even on international flights). Salaried employees are expected to put in a full 8 hours every single day or use hours out of your paid-time-off bank to cover any deficit; regardless of whether you wind up with 60 hours by end of day on Friday. Some managers allow a comp day here and there for weekend work or travel, but nothing is consistent and it's all on the down-low - which is surprising considering the new laws around the number of OT hours salaried employees can be expected to work.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to actually come down from the ivory tower once in a while to understand the actual roles your people perform. While guideline and policies may make sense on paper, they do not necessarily play out well in a real-world office environment.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Really enjoyed the people I worked with, as an intern I got to hear from company executives and learned about the origins of the business.

    Cons

I was never passionate about my work but enjoyed my time at Varian.
