I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has great work benefits. They match more than a standard company for the 401K. Annual bonus.

    Cons

The company culture has changed. They took care of the people, and the people took care of the customers and products, which made everyone happy. Now it's all about the bottom line. The company is hiring too many senior managers and reorganizing the current senior managers. New senior managers don't know and don't understand the business.

    Advice to Management

New management needs to give more than a year to know the people and product lines.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great products, top of the line software and hardware. A true fighter for Cancer. Management fair and balanced. Great benefits. Oncology President (woman) is top notch.

    Cons

Mid-level management heavy (often literally) and "business sectors" created out of whim are disorganized at best. Old managers fill roles as "strategic" developers to get new sales blood in field. Customers are categorically confused by this. Strategically broken. Clinical Support Managers and Sales posting party pics on social media is despicable. They must have large expense accounts for fancy drinks and posh restaurants. Management channels are full of pats on the back and closed door sessions. If you did not grow up in a street doing back alley deals, you are probably not going to make it at Varian. See more in Advice.

    Advice to Management

Management is deliberately blind to side deals with "business partners". If the quota is made they look the other way. Seriously, the upper management needs to wake up. Despite warnings from famous Fox lectures, the culprits smile at each other in Coso Nostra style. Known third parties have been shaken down for this, suppliers, dealers and others. Burned? yes, that's why this needs to be stopped.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

What we do for humanity each day is truly amazing.

    Cons

    Management is terrible
The career path is to follow the exit sign. If you don't have any ambition this is the place for you!
There is no urgency in management
    HR is a joke

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring your friends and start looking internally. We have some tremendous talent if you'll only take the time to look around you! If you take care of your customers and your employees everything else will fall in to place.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Company exists for a great cause, so feel good about working there.

    Cons

Cost control of a manufacturing company within a high-tech company in a high-tech location results in below average overall compensation and limited budgets in G&A areas.

    Advice to Management

Invest in people and strategic vision/change that looks out 5-10 years.
Challenge the status quo and evolve. Do the right things because they're right to do, not the wrong things because of budget constraints.

    Pros

It's extremely chill here, everyone is friendly - but there are groups.. kinda like high school to fit in. Majority are male in the manufacturing department.

    Cons

takes a VERY long time to progress in the company, its a lot of favoritism.

    Advice to Management

Have woman be in leadership and management, this way the woman who are working under management can actually feel motivated.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Varian is the market leader and has the best products to date, although the information system is questionable versus Elekta's IMPAC system. What Varian does as a company (providing solutions to cancer patients requiring radiation therapy) is very good thing.

    Cons

The medical group has grown form ~800 employees WW in the late 80's early 90's to todays numbers 7 fold and tremendous growth in revenue, unfortunately, depending on what your looking for has become a company that creates process (IMPORTANT) to be able to plug any "Joe" into a position (not realistic for many groups). I feel that "good" managers and management has not and was unable to keep up with growth and employee morale has suffered. Not to say all groups are unhappy but it definitely is a growing with "so" many "good" people choosing to leave.

    Advice to Management

Ask yourself, would you stay if you were not vested?
