    Pros

    Great mission
Good benefits (cafeteria, gym, other benefits)
    Good work-life balance
Global environment - get to work with lots of people around the world

    Cons

Not a good place to be if you want to grow
Money is always a problem, for everything
Lots of unhappy employees, low morale
Feels like a very old-school company

    Advice to Management

This company needs a big shake up. It's a good company but there will be a big problem with holding on to good employees things continue in present direction.

    Pros

Great benefits, work life balance, people are great. Awesome cafeteria.

    Cons

Its who you know not what you know, nepotism is extremely high, if you are not the manager's relative then you are not going to get anywhere. After 4 years of employment you no longer get raises only lump sums. They'd rather hire externally (temps) then promote their own employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting/hiring your relatives. You are going to start loosing employees.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

401k match (6%), reduced employee stock option (15%), tuition reimbursement (up to $7,500/yr), enjoyable coworkers for the most part. Environmental friendly.

    Cons

HR. Varian used to be above average in many ways (bonuses, promotions, etc) that set them apart from most other companies. In the past year, HR has headed the reduction of many perks, the quarterly bonus being one of them. Company parties are a thing of the past (cancelled Christmas party and cancelled thanksgiving dinner). Recognition (in terms of some sort of monetary gain- gift cards, lunches, etc) are rare these days. HR came out with a new "revolutionary" way for employees to get promoted within the company. This new booklet has made getting promoted incredibly difficult and designed 100% to keep people down.

    Advice to Management

Like any company, the management varies so much that many employees feel cheated. E.x. I've worked with multiple people who were overlooked for promotions, but others got promoted since their manager had different standard, even though they were not even close to deserving.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Varian Medical has a lot of positive points, the people are great to work with, there is great energy. Without crossing over into the Cons already there is some conflict. Benefits are pretty good and fair with industrial standards, plus they have a great Ed reimbursement program which they give about $8000 grand a year. By working hard, you will make a great life-long friends here.

    Cons

Varian Medical has major Communication issues, between upper management to middle management, and back down to the worker bees. There is a lack of leadership in most departments, but that’s not to say all departments. Working in Facilities was great as the technicians worked well together, aside from management/The facilities shop "person in charge" has no trade background. The "person in charge" in this department has NO leadership skills, and does not know how to talk to people.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes and look at the big picture, when your workers talk....you need to listen, leadership skills should be you top thing. Get rid of the classic 1940's "Mirco-management" style and bump up the real hard working team players!

    Pros

Competitive pay, lots of long-term employees, good benefits include training opportunities and education reimbursement program so there are lots of ways to learn. A very stable company and almost impossible to get fired.

    Cons

Lack of urgency, low performance is accepted, the "go-to" people are very quickly overloaded.

    Advice to Management

Instead of giving more work to employees that are effective, manage the lower performers so that the work load is more evenly spread.

    Pros

Stable company, market leaders in Radiation oncology field.

    Cons

In software group, not very competitive from compensation point of view.

    Advice to Management

Need to look at the making compensations competitive with rest of the industry.

    Pros

Benefits are hard to beat. Varian doesn't have some of the perks that some other companies have, but the combination of their health, 401k, stock and other benefits are hard to beat.

    Cons

Year-end bonuses are typically flat lined across everyone which means that the percentage increase is tiny. Best way of increasing pay is to change departments, otherwise increases don't keep up.

    Advice to Management

Increase your value of the employees and you'll have more valuable employees.

    Pros

Stable company with a noble cause. Stable employment as much as can be expected during this day and time. Going through some much needed changes in structure to bring more departments on the same page.

    Cons

Over worked and underpaid for most employees below director level.

    Advice to Management

Trickle better pay down to employees. Promote more realistic work/life balance.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, good salary, opportunities for advancement, ok vacation and benefits. Overall, a good place to work and be stimulated in a daily basis.

    Cons

This is a multinational company so you have the inherent issues when dealing with work ethic and commitment from Western European countries. Vacation and sick time is lumped together. The initial vacation bank is good for new employees, but doesn't increment adequately for established employees. For a smaller company there is tremendous amount of bureaucracy to have to wade though to get even the simplest task completed.
