    Pros

Solid stable company, good product, great market share. Great benefits, competitive salaries. Job satisfaction in what you do for others. i.e. the patients.

    Cons

I worked for Varian Medical Systems for over 15 years. There is a HUGE culture split between the Brick and Mortar jobs and the field jobs. When I visited the office (many times), besides the usual politics and begrudging of this or that everyone seemed generally happy and content. Their work/life balance was pretty good and they seemed to be a fairly cohesive team. In the field, especially in the last 5-8 years, you feel like you are just a number. The company has ZERO, respect for you, your life, your family, what kind of manpower is truly needed to provide world class support of your products, etc. If you ask anyone in field service if they work under 50 hours a week I think they would laugh at you. I averaged 65 during a 5 year period leading up to my resignation. That is a tough row to hoe when you have a family. Sadly that is the norm, not the exception. They are basically trying to do more with less as every company is doing these days. I have also noticed a shift in the "value of knowledge" within the company as well. Upper management seems to put little to no "value" into your experience with the company or otherwise. If they can hire someone off the street for cheaper, then to them, that is a better deal. They seem to forget that a person highly efficient and proficient at his or her job can actually save the company money. Lastly, the company seems to put the bottom line before customer satisfaction and certainly before employee satisfaction. I would suggest talking candidly to a few employees before accepting a job here.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the customer and the employees, if not your market share will continue to slide, your edge is not your product or your software, the competition can treat the same treatments, at the same speed for less money. Your edge is your customer service and field organization. If you lose that, you are in trouble.

    Pros

Clearly defined roles for manufacturing personnel and established work procedures made my time at Varian very happy and successful

    Cons

Longer term employees with history have some bitter feelings but a strong person won't be affected by the background noise of complaints

I worked at Varian Medical Systems (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Very family friendly. It seemed that there were lots of couples, siblings, and somehow related people working at the same place. Never seen anything like this before. A lot of companies have strict policies against this type of thing. Personally, I think is a good thing.
-Health Insurance coverage was the best I've ever had. Premiums for salary employees were a bit high, but very worth it.
-Management was very dedicated, and a lot egos getting in the way.
    -Well balanced work-life

    Cons

-It may be in danger of becoming too "corporate" where bottom dollar is first and foremost, and employees are just disposable assets. But again, who isn't these days. Not there yet, but seemed that this was the direction it was headed.

    Advice to Management

Continue to value your employees input, and properly balance the high demands of executive management, with realistic, long term objectives, that will yield positive results.

    Pros

Great work environment, very important and well-disseminated corporate mission and values, good stock purchasing program (ESPP), Restricted Share Offering (RSU) for some positions, flexible corporate environment

    Cons

Limited opportunities for upward mobility, lower salary band recruitment, rigid/resistant to changes, silo-driven that creates resistance to information exchanging, leadership has not fully adapted and transitioned from a functional into a matrix organization format

    Advice to Management

Impose and mandate organization flatness to better service the customers. Curb initiatives from management to create more vertical layers that may impact customer resolution responsiveness. Mandate division cross-pollination to eliminate silo-driven behavior that are detrimental to cohesiveness and synergy achievement.
