    Pros

The people are awesome. You won't find a better group of people to work with.

    Cons

The management team needs a overhaul. Senior management hiring kin and promoting them without the proper experience and education required.

    Advice to Management

Stick to the company core values and policies.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time

    Pros

The work is very interesting. Varian and medical and physics in general is one of the few sectors where you can see radiation physics in action. Research and development projects are therefore quite interesting and meeting research requirements not trivial. The end goal is to improve cancer care, so the R&D projects are interesting and worth pursuing.

    Cons

This industry is heavily regulated and with a reason: bugs affect the health and safety of patient. So, expect lots of paperwork and testing before a release.

    Advice to Management

Like in most software shops, development is organized by product managers who feed requirements to developers. Communication here could be improved.

Good company values - working within the medical field to better the lives of people in need. It's nice to know that your work will go on to help the lives of many individuals across the globe.

    Cons

Not many from the company as a whole. Anything can be said about any individual, but as a company, Varian has great intentions.

    Advice to Management

    Communication is key!

    Pros

It's like a government job...you can't get fired from there and people stay forever, many stay too long

    Cons

Slow decision making. Below Market Pay. Low Growth. Low Opportunity

    Advice to Management

Invigorate your executive team with some fresh new leaders to change the status quo.

    Pros

It is easy to take pride in working on the best radiation therapy product in the world.

    Cons

Service is consistently understaffed. Management sells contracts for support past 9PM and has coverage only until 5PM all over. The demands and expectations grow every day. When asked for help, the answer is always work harder. They talk a moderate game about work/life balance but have no true intentions to help provide it.

    Advice to Management

Stop selling contracts that you can't handle with your manpower levels. Hire more service engineers to handle the workloads to reduce the stress and improve morale. You will have much better luck with longevity of employees.

    Cons

Ethnic culture is fairly monolithic which does not always fit into main stream american culture.

    Advice to Management

Promote growth of individual, act on good ideas faster, and not to be stuck with bureaucracy.

    Pros

Varian offers a variety of self-directed, customer focused career opportunities. The company is mature with solid long-term growth and innovation. Employees have a variety of advancement options.

    Cons

As a primarily Silicon Valley/Bay Area company, affordable housing is of some concern. Most field positions have better prospects but tend to require longer work hours.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good compensation plan. Vacation accrues quickly. At least you will feel good knowing whatever work you are able to contribute might help people with cancer.

    Cons

Varian is a complacent "good ol' boy" organization that's come a long way, but still has a long way to go. The old Varian was heavily relationship focused while the new Varian compensated by going too far in the other direction with metrics. Adding metrics to guide them was a good thing, but they went overboard focusing on each and every single tree--losing sight of the forest. And somewhere along the line in all of it, they lost their heart. At points, you feel like you work for the evil empire.

    Advice to Management

Find your heart. Reach out to the people who work for you several levels down. That means, getting out of your chair, losing your attitude of how 'busy' you are, and making your way to visit people in service, manufacturing, and engineering. You're hanging out with too many executives and people at your own level.
