    Pros

I had a good experience with this company. The pay was good and so were the benefits.

    Cons

The moral at the company was not as high as I hoped it would have been, although it was a great job.

    Pros

Great benefits, work life balance, people are great. Awesome cafeteria.

    Cons

Its who you know not what you know, nepotism is extremely high, if you are not the manager's relative then you are not going to get anywhere. After 4 years of employment you no longer get raises only lump sums. They'd rather hire externally (temps) then promote their own employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting/hiring your relatives. You are going to start loosing employees.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has great work benefits. They match more than a standard company for the 401K. Annual bonus.

    Cons

The company culture has changed. They took care of the people, and the people took care of the customers and products, which made everyone happy. Now it's all about the bottom line. The company is hiring too many senior managers and reorganizing the current senior managers. New senior managers don't know and don't understand the business.

    Advice to Management

New management needs to give more than a year to know the people and product lines.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

At the first glance I saw real potential with this company in making it a career.
Liked the position and people I was working with at first.

    Cons

Managers; are cool and nice one day and the next they fire you. And won't even be the one to do it.
In my interview a woman that was suppose to be my trainer asked me if I was into drama, I said "NO! Mind my own business." Well she ended up being the dramatic one of everyone in that company and the reason why I don't have a job.
    MOST RIDICULOUS JOB EVER!!!
Oh and I had to train myself on everything.

    Advice to Management

It doesn't matter how long a damn employee has worked for the company there are always two sides to the story. But the management would always go with the veterans.

    Pros

    Good peers
    Company is stable.
    Strong products

    Cons

IT work environment is a total mess
Work is done just to get things checked off not to give any business value
Management has progressively become horrible. Cutting costs in a way that employee feels no motivation for any work
Management has become close door. hidden agenda etc has become very common

    Advice to Management

If you want to run an IT shop look progressive. Cutting people's awards jsut makes them less motivated and you are not getting their 100%. Please stop managing IT like the 19th century.

I have been working at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

401k match (6%), reduced employee stock option (15%), tuition reimbursement (up to $7,500/yr), enjoyable coworkers for the most part. Environmental friendly.

    Cons

HR. Varian used to be above average in many ways (bonuses, promotions, etc) that set them apart from most other companies. In the past year, HR has headed the reduction of many perks, the quarterly bonus being one of them. Company parties are a thing of the past (cancelled Christmas party and cancelled thanksgiving dinner). Recognition (in terms of some sort of monetary gain- gift cards, lunches, etc) are rare these days. HR came out with a new "revolutionary" way for employees to get promoted within the company. This new booklet has made getting promoted incredibly difficult and designed 100% to keep people down.

    Advice to Management

Like any company, the management varies so much that many employees feel cheated. E.x. I've worked with multiple people who were overlooked for promotions, but others got promoted since their manager had different standard, even though they were not even close to deserving.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great products, top of the line software and hardware. A true fighter for Cancer. Management fair and balanced. Great benefits. Oncology President (woman) is top notch.

    Cons

Mid-level management heavy (often literally) and "business sectors" created out of whim are disorganized at best. Old managers fill roles as "strategic" developers to get new sales blood in field. Customers are categorically confused by this. Strategically broken. Clinical Support Managers and Sales posting party pics on social media is despicable. They must have large expense accounts for fancy drinks and posh restaurants. Management channels are full of pats on the back and closed door sessions. If you did not grow up in a street doing back alley deals, you are probably not going to make it at Varian. See more in Advice.

    Advice to Management

Management is deliberately blind to side deals with "business partners". If the quota is made they look the other way. Seriously, the upper management needs to wake up. Despite warnings from famous Fox lectures, the culprits smile at each other in Coso Nostra style. Known third parties have been shaken down for this, suppliers, dealers and others. Burned? yes, that's why this needs to be stopped.

I worked at Varian Medical Systems (More than a year)

    Pros

Money was good but, not work the abuse, stress and unhealthy environment.

    Cons

Upper management does not support front line managers unless it suits them.
Verbal abuse from customers is permitted even when reported to HR and upper management...
Back stabbing work environment, no change is allowed and is immediately slammed down.
No work life balance in the Service sector so you have very angry, aggressive and uncooperative service engineers. They only stay because they can "work the system" and the company goes through front line managers frequently because healthy change is not supported and actually discouraged.
One week you're getting an award and the next week your in trouble for trying to do the right thing.
Discrimination is allowed and unsafe work practices are not addressed when reported.
Harassment and Slander even continues when you leave so that you have a hard time finding work.
Even when you report it to the company in HR, nothing is done so the slander and defamation of your character and capabilities continues.
One of the worst work experiences of my career...
Do your homework before you work for this company.

    Advice to Management

Change upper management to people who really care about their employees and not just their bottom line and bonus.

    Pros

Varian Medical has a lot of positive points, the people are great to work with, there is great energy. Without crossing over into the Cons already there is some conflict. Benefits are pretty good and fair with industrial standards, plus they have a great Ed reimbursement program which they give about $8000 grand a year. By working hard, you will make a great life-long friends here.

    Cons

Varian Medical has major Communication issues, between upper management to middle management, and back down to the worker bees. There is a lack of leadership in most departments, but that’s not to say all departments. Working in Facilities was great as the technicians worked well together, aside from management/The facilities shop "person in charge" has no trade background. The "person in charge" in this department has NO leadership skills, and does not know how to talk to people.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes and look at the big picture, when your workers talk....you need to listen, leadership skills should be you top thing. Get rid of the classic 1940's "Mirco-management" style and bump up the real hard working team players!

    Pros

Majority of the people are awesome to work with who treat you like family but more importantly help you achieve and succeed in other areas plus help guide you to be promotable.

    Cons

Since the new CEO and management came in, the format has now changed and they don't help or encourage anyone to be promotable or treat anyone like they are important which cause the company to have its worse sales in 40 years which cause the company to lay off and lose contracts.

    Advice to Management

get your head out and realize don't ever change the wheel of progress by adding more overhead than actual people that make the company work.
