I worked at Varolii full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Positive vibe, happy people, decent pay, and good benefits. I genuinely enjoyed my time at this company and still maintain friendships with many of my ex-coworkers.

    Cons

Questionable management decisions (at the time I was working there). For example, when I started, everyone had a laptop. But they decided to phase laptops out in favor of old-school desktop PCs. Being tethered to the office goes against their values of work/life balance. Hopefully this has changed.

    Pros

Visionary ideas made it exciting at times.

    Cons

Lack of scalability made it hard to deliver on promises.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on scalability and security

I have been working at Varolii full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great team of co-workers that do whatever it takes to satisfy customers. One of the two co-founders is still involved, but as a contractor, but he is amazing.

    Cons

The inability to successfully create a scalable platform caused issues with selling new services and created problems with delivering products on time. Every year was a net new and different comp plan that finally was too hard to manage and caused too much turnover for sales.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Varolii full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Causal dress code, great co-workers, excellent benefits, transit subsidy. The tech support role required on site presence, however many developers and project managers were allowed to telecommute at times. Great downtown location in a historic building, and close to lots of restaurants. Very little micro management, and mostly supportive managers who were ready and willing to offer assistance when needed.

    Cons

Varolli is an SAAS company offering a great service, however the UNIX / SQL core software is quite complex and the code base is somewhat antiquated with only a few menu systems to work with. Most interactions with the application are performed using SQL statements and limited UNIX command line instructions. A lot of tribal knowledge, but they were working on adding knowledge base articles at the time I was there. Still - not enough information in many cases.

    Advice to Management

Offer a greater depth of training to both new and current employees.

I have been working at Varolii full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great experience because they are consistently going thru change.

    Cons

    Very poor leadership and guidance.

    Advice to Management

Understand the value of your employees. This company would not be where it is today without each and everyone of them.

I have been working at Varolii full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great work/life balance
    Liberal PTO policy
    Health benefits are good
    Fair amount of company activities
    Great coworkers

    Cons

    No professional growth
Lagging behind competitors in some areas
Under funding projects and under estimating projects final cost

    Advice to Management

Don’t try to offer exactly what the customer ask for, instead listen to them and come up with solutions to their challenges.

I have been working at Varolii full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Interesting products and technology
    - Burlington office owns entire side of major product line (other side handled by headquarters in WA)
    - Autonomous office feel
    - Good work/life balance
    - Working from home accepted, though almost to a fault

    Cons

    - Engineering/Product Management has tough time meeting deadlines
    - Deliverable promises regularly delayed
    - Lagging behind competitors in mobile marketplace
    - Rely too heavily on homegrown scripting languages (though slowly moving to Ruby)
    - No defined plan for professional growth
    - Office is so empty so often due to amount of work-from-homers, leaves kind of an eery feeling

    Advice to Management

Don't let the customer be the leader and you the follower. Take control and direct the company to sustained profitability and growth by closely monitoring the market and building the technology to grab it.

    Pros

Flexible Work Environment; Great downtown location and company pays 100% for bus pass. People are friendly and passionate about what they do. Senior management is engaged and are striving to do the right thing. Currently we have some new senior managers who show tremendous promise for getting Varolii back on track.

    Cons

We have a very poor bonus system and currently no money to improve it. Our sales cycle takes a long time for revenue to generate, which is part of our problem.

    Advice to Management

Continue to work together and strive for a common goal. Don't forget to listen to the rank and file and offer opportunities for growth and advancement whenever possible.

    Pros

Great group of talented, friendly people. Good environment - collaborative, good work/life balance for most positions, exciting technology, mid size company

    Cons

Company hasn't had much growth so the growth opportunities for employees has been somewhat limited over the past few years, but anticipate that will change over the next year.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the open communication and let employees know status of projects, roadmap etc. Continue to be open and straight forward - it goes a long way.
