Tutoring online allows for flexible schedule

Jan 26, 2019 - Math Tutor in Mesa, AZ

    Business Outlook

    Pros

You can set your own hours, work online from home and determine which clients you are best able to serve. It's great for students or stay-at-home parents that need part-time work.

    Cons

The pay is not that good ($15/hour) for somebody with a Bachelors degree.

    They Take Care of You

Feb 19, 2021 - Tutor Engagement Specialist in Omaha, NE

    Pros

Good pay, some of the best benefits I've ever had at a job, I love that it is completely remote, and flexible. Not only do you get PTO but they are flexible with swapping days/hours if needed which is really nice. I enjoy the culture, we work hard and have a lot of fun.

    Cons

Can sometimes be a bit stressful. Especially balancing phone calls, inbound texts and placement work all at once. The management does a really good job trying to accommodate for this the best they can by giving us time off calls to focus on work. At times, though it can still get a bit overwhelming. For the most part one of the lower-stress jobs I've worked, just be ready to work hard.

Opportunity to Make Extra Money - On Your Schedule

    Feb 3, 2015 - Tutor
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

One of the best things about working as a tutor at Varsity Tutors are the flexible hours - you can literally tutor on your time. And because you can work in their online environment, you can choose odd hours based on your time zone, which may be just fine for someone three time zones away.

    Cons

It isn't the fault of the company, but sometimes the clients will cancel at the last minute, or not show up. Fortunately, the company compensates you for 'no shows' or cancellations that take place with less than 24 hours notice.

Great company, but a lot of work.

Jul 2, 2015 - Tutor in Austin, TX

    Pros

-$20/hr base pay is nice! -Minimum of 1.5 hours per session guarantees you're not wasting too much time driving around. -If you have to drive too far you get a gas bonus! -100% freedom in scheduling and teaching method; they really just send you clients and then you take it ifrom there

    Cons

-During the summer you don't get nearly as many clients -Most students want tutoring in the evening on weekdays so your evenings aren't free, AND it can be hard to schedule more students when they all want the same time period.

    Great Experience

    Pros

I work for Varsity Tutors as a tutor for all levels of math, chemistry, physics, and standardized test preparation. Working for Varsity Tutors has been an amazing experience. My hours are flexible and are centered solely around when my students want to have their tutoring sessions. I can choose to accept tutoring opportunities that are either online or in-person, depending on the needs of the clients who are paired with me. There is no minimum tutoring requirement for each week or month, so I can accept or decline clients to best fit my schedule and personal needs. This will be incredibly important during the school year, because I will only be able to tutor a small amount and at very specific times during the week. But that's okay, because my boss (also called my City Director) understands my own needs as a student as well! If I do not have time to meet with many students, I can instead use my time to submit practice test questions to the test bank, or just focus on my own personal needs. Working for Varsity Tutors has given me a great opportunity to meet different kinds of people and learn from their experiences and their questions while they learn from my tutoring and my academic advice. Altogether, I would say working for Varsity Tutors has been an amazing experience, and I sincerely hope my clients are experiencing this same level of satisfaction after working with me and working with the company.

    Cons

The only downside of working for Varsity Tutors is the online opportunities. Since there are so many tutors across the nation, nearly all the online tutoring opportunities are gone in less than 15 seconds. This can be a bit frustrating if you are looking for clients.

    Independent Hourly Contractor

Feb 18, 2015 - Certified Tutor in Boston, MA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Varsity Tutors has flexible hours that allows me to continue to go to school full time and manage my schedule. I am able to take as few or as many clients as I want. It has been a really great opportunity to add to my budget and continue employment and education. Their management team is responsive and professional in all communications. The clients I work with are invariably kind and polite. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects to keep things interesting.

    Cons

There is not much room for advancement or salary increase. There is little transparency about much clients pay for the services they receive. In a large city the travel time to get to clients can severely reduce the functional pay rate.

    Easy and Fun

Jan 8, 2021 - Tutor in Minneapolis, MN

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Complete independence to set hours and to take on students whose tutoring needs align with your skill set. Work from home. Responsive, helpful tech support team. Ideal part-time job for a college student, recent grad, or anyone with free time who wants some extra cash and did well in school.

    Cons

Not enough pay to be a full-time job. Tutoring requires unique communication skills and knowledge of subject matter that some people may not possess.

    Pros
