    Great company to work for

Mar 9, 2020 - Online Tutor in Columbus, NM

    Pros

Working at Varsity Tutors for the last two years has been a very positive experience for me. The online platform is very well designed and allows me to work with students all over the country in the comfort of my own home. I set my own schedule and Varsity Tutors takes care of all the billing which is wonderful. The technical support staff is very helpful when there are any computer related issues that need attention. Working for Varsity Tutors has allowed me to meet many new students and their families and experience the satisfaction of helping them to meet their academic goals.

    Cons

The hourly rate is lower than can be earned as a private tutor but this is offset by the fact that Varsity Tutors finds the students, does the billing, and provides a robust platfom for online tutoring.

Good part-time job for college students

    Pros

It is great to set your own schedule and you can accept or reject any offers you'd like. The organization is always on your side.

    Cons

It isn't quite worth the pay. It is inconvenient to drive to clients homes/areas and the gas adds up. For some reason the way I had to file taxes I I ended up breaking even in the end. I also had clients not show up sometimes and it just cost me money.

    I LOVE my job!

    Pros

I absolutely love working for Varsity Tutors! As a college student with multiple jobs, time management is crucial for me and I love managing the time that I work. Varsity Tutors has done an amazing job at offering me a very flexible schedule that I can pick for myself!

    Cons

I have had my share of technical difficulties with the website, but technical support is always available and there to help when I need them.

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to find new students and the website is helpful in scheduling sessions to avoid conflicts.

    Cons

The pay is fine, not great, not terrible. Online pay is much lower than in-person, which you could make the case is more difficult because keeping students engaged can be a challenge when you're miles away from each other. The calendar doesn't sync to your personal calendar so reconciling events to avoid conflicts can be a challenge as well. Tech support for online sessions is only helpful if they're readily available, otherwise trying to have them help you over email or phone is almost non-existant. No room for negotitation, which would be helpful if a student lives further away, and public transportation, which is the primary mode for most residents in the NYC area, costs more to travel outside of the city, which they could be more considerate of.

Supportive staff; ideal job for supplementary income

    Pros

I've been working with Varsity Tutors for 6 months and have had only positive interactions with the staff and clients. The nature of the job is a huge plus-- there is flexibility in scheduling, number of hours worked, subjects taught, clients, and time-off. The staff has been communicative, accommodating, and responsive to any issues that have come up. I enjoy working with them

    Cons

The schedule can be a little unpredictable due to clients' and families' busy schedules. However, the cancellation policy helps offset the unpredictability.

    Great Company!

    Aug 28, 2020 - Academic Tutor

    Pros

-Flexible scheduling: you dictate your availability for tutoring and you schedule sessions within your timeframe -Multiple Opportunities: the company sends you multiple alerts for tutoring needs in your area (remote or in person) and you can choose which ones will work best with your schedule and area of expertise -Quick Assistance: anytime I had an issue with a new client or tutoring program, the help line was quick to step in and facilitate. -Great Pay: depending on your subject and workload, your pay increases! -Remote Options: you can do virtual tutoring and your job moves with you. I recently moved across the country and can still get tutoring requests in another state for virtual or in-person tutoring.

    Cons

I only have two cons for working here. The first con is that the first semester of the school year is slow, but that's mostly because parents aren't interested in getting a tutor early in the year. The second con is that you don't know who your direct supervisor is so you can't really put them down on your resume or future job applications; it kind of makes your job sound fake. Otherwise, it's a great job!

    Independent Hourly Contractor

    Pros

Varsity Tutors has flexible hours that allows me to continue to go to school full time and manage my schedule. I am able to take as few or as many clients as I want. It has been a really great opportunity to add to my budget and continue employment and education. Their management team is responsive and professional in all communications. The clients I work with are invariably kind and polite. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects to keep things interesting.

    Cons

There is not much room for advancement or salary increase. There is little transparency about much clients pay for the services they receive. In a large city the travel time to get to clients can severely reduce the functional pay rate.

    Excellent experience

    Pros

I really enjoy tutoring for Varsity Tutors. I am a junior high teacher who works full time during the school year calendar and was looking forward to connecting with students outside of the school and supplementing my income. Varsity Tutors provides tutors with many opportunities to connect with as many students as your schedule allows. The students I've met are diverse in needs and motivated to learn! Varsity Tutors is thorough in encouraging tutors; staff members check in with tutors to understand your experience. If there's a question? A staff member is available to help. Management of appointments is thorough and clear. I have loved my experience as a tutor for Varsity Tutors, and as the summer approaches I look forward to making many more meaningful connections with students!

    Cons

I have not experienced any problems at all working for Varsity Tutors.
