I have been working at Veeco Instruments full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Highly techincal, focused group in St. Paul are a joy to work with. The technology is exciting. The pace of work is great.

    Cons

Corporate is trying to consolidate as many functions as possible to the detriment to the business as well as customer satisfaction. Sales, Service and Customer Fulfillment, and Human Resources have all been taken away from the business units and pulled into pooled resources. It has resulted in poorly trained Sales and Service people who do not know enough about St. Paul's product to adequately do the job. The customers are becoming increasingly frustrated with this setup.

    Advice to Management

We are not a billion dollar company which is what we were angling for when all of the restructuring occurred. Admit your mistake and give back the functions to the Business Units before any more customers are lost.

I have been working at Veeco Instruments full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Challenging company with no chance of boredom as fast environment to work in. Not a place for the meek or lazy. If you can handle excessive work load and learn self reward rather than being recognized by management for hard work. I find myself capable of prioritizing my own work load to only the important items that affect deliverables.

    Cons

Not enough resources as management believes in lean staff and overworking them. Projects and new products are always under staffed, under managed, and unrealistic time lines for completion. This always leads to fixing errors and design issues over and over again.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that do it right the first time and staff for success will actually save cost as excessive resources are always cleaning up the mistakes. Poor supply chain management as many suppliers hate our organization due to poor way of doing business that borders on unethical.

    Pros

Very interesting products and cool technologies. At an individual level there are many good people with excellent skill sets. Friendly working environment.

    Cons

Corporate culture dominates, particularly quarterly deliverables where the management seem almost desperate to collect all possible revenue, even at great expense and loss in quality.

    Advice to Management

Many layoffs company wide erode the feeling of job security. Everyone seems to be looking at jobs not from wanting to leave as much as just to cover their bases.

I have been working at Veeco Instruments (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are a good people who work at Veeco, they are hard workers and friendly. It is enjoyable to go to work on a daily basis which is what is most important. Veeco has a cafeteria where there is food cooked fresh everyday which I would consider one of the best perks along with Bagels the first Friday of every month. They also offer free coffee, tea and hot chocolate which is nice

    Cons

The amount of work that is expected of you is more than your average work load. If you are able to handle the work load it will then be expected as if it is normal. It seems the culture here is that the management is more important than the actual workers, I've seen so many good smart employees leave while they keep managers who don't do anything except for meet with workers all day.

    Advice to Management

My advise to management would be to worry about the people who create the designs for these amazing machines we create, and not to focus on 3 managers for every one employee. I would also like to say we appreciate the little things like bagels every first Friday and the convenience of getting breakfast and lunch in the building.

I worked at Veeco Instruments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some great people with diverse backgrounds and skills. Good overall team morale and spirit.

    Cons

Some of the factories were grade C real estate quality at best. Some managers didn't appreciate or agree with IT goals and the value technology outside product design could benefit the company.

    Advice to Management

Please keep weathering the many storms of high tech manufacturing. The company is a worthwhile ongoing concern that produces quality products and employs so many great people.
