I worked at Veeco Instruments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with at the individual contributor level.

    Cons

    Veeco is disfunction personified.

Senior management are liars, unfair and genuinely don't care about people. A few career-minded individuals rise to the top for no clear reason other than their ability to schmooze and tell stories.

7 layoffs in 4 years; 4 GMs in 4 years; 5 HR director in 5 years, the list goes on and on. MOCVD business unit has over 300 employees in early 2012 and now it's down to ~120 people or so (and it keeps shrinking).

Hires rejects from other bigger capital equipment companies to be the 25th senior directors or vice presidents in the hope to revitalize its business. The only way to save Veeco is by firing its CEO and President who perpetrate a culture of fear, distrust and extreme politics among its employees.

More and more resorting to 'financialization' of its business instead of investing in things that matter, such as RnD and innovation.

    Advice to Management

Have shame and stop driving Veeco to the ground.

I worked at Veeco Instruments full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Veeco Instruments provides a platform for employees to gain experiences in a unique niche industry. Employees are an integral part in the design, redesign, and build process.

    Cons

There is a lack in workplace culture that hurts the overall experience. Management to employee relations are very distant. The Human Resource efforts are a joke. This feeling is mutual throughout the company.

Very little opportunity for career growth and personal development.

    Advice to Management

Managers not only manage the business, but the people. The success of your employees drive the success of your business.

I worked at Veeco Instruments full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary and bonuses are great when times are good.

    Cons

Layoffs, constant change in management, and restructuring of departments, unstable industry, orders can range from a few hundred units a year to 5 a year.

    Advice to Management

Develop a 5 year plan, staff accordingly and ride the ups and downs with contractors not full time employees. It's demoralizing to the employees to see management go on a hiring spree only to turn around and layoff full time employees months later.
