I worked at Ventana Medical (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great company. Still has good pay, benefits. Employees were once very passionate about the mission, they were engaged and eager to give their all. A number of years ago, the leadership was good. Chris G was a leader who took the company to great places.

    Cons

Along the line and after CG left, Ventana started to make poor leadership choices. We promoted unqualified people to be field directors and pseudo "leaders", we decided how many people to hire based on faulty data, we began outsourcing parts and we began to have serious quality and morale issues. Many issues led to Ventana floundering and eventually Roche had enough and shook it all up. In the process, they destroyed trust, credibility and left a culture of fear. All something they said they weren't going to do when they bought the company. So many people were let go or jumped ship and the align to shine culture became a flee or face the boot culture. Improve It became Remove It. The above the line culture became a culture of who can we blame for this mess. It's Roche's fault/it's Ventana's fault. Customers and employees were all pointing fingers.

    Advice to Management

Roche bought Ventana saying they weren't going to interfere with the business. They had done that in the past and had learned from their mistakes. This was the actual CEO message to the whole company. Well, they did interfere. In fact, they gutted the company and pushed out half the team and relocated much of it to Indy. So, anyone currently working at Roche/Ventana, if the CEO/"leadership" team gives you a big smile and tells you something, keep the "we have learned from our mistakes in the past, don't worry about it message" in mind. On the other side, if you're top hiring criteria is to meet mandatory diversity targets, you're going to eventually damage your business. That's the reality of PC business.

    Pros

Good work in the healthcare field with a great upside.

    Cons

Ego-driven, non-transparent, hypocritical leadership. By the time I left the GM, Head of SW and other senior staff were moved to another Roche property. They drove it into the ground and let go many very good and dedicated people.

    Advice to Management

    Get involved with your employees

I have been working at Ventana Medical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people who you make friends with and the events they do for the employees.

    Cons

There is no leadership, Everything revolves around the cart before horse ideal. Deadlines are yesterday and there is no commitment to the employees. It is like a slave mill the harder you work the more you are required to do and forget team mates to support you, they only hire who they know. If you are a temp forget making it to full time status without having to jump through hoops. When an employer tells you that your development is not priority, they are not ideal for me. They woo the new candidates because they offer high starting pay than most locally, but that is where you remain because forget about raises unless you work in manufacturing operations. All other departments are see as overhead.

    Advice to Management

Listen to you employees when they come to you with a concern. If a manager has twenty plus complaints is is time for some action vs retaliating against the employee who spoke up.

    Pros

Healthcare benefits, mountain view and quiet area of town, great people, feel the mission

    Cons

Fast paced so heavy workload and stress level so not great work/life balance with high turnover and low morale, very slow to hire, much more difficult to get in from outside, few promotions or succession planning, Roche 'layers' substantial

    Advice to Management

Need to treat ALL employees as the #1 resource of the company--top priority even over products and profit

High turnover rate and slow to fill positions. Promotions are little and few.

I worked at Ventana Medical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really great people there. They care a lot about you. Passionate about what they do, and that they are working to help cancer patients worldwide.

    Cons

Upper Mgt seems misguided on how to impact the marketplace. Recent separation of Mrktg/Sales from the main Ventana going to Roche corporate have created gaps and uncertainty.

    Advice to Management

Keep the focus on the PASSION, but rely on your employees more to provide insight.

    Pros

Best products compared to competition, patient focused, invests heavily in R&D to bring the absolute best products to market for the safest and best possible care in cancer

    Cons

Very low earning compared to other device/capital companies, continuous changes to comp structure, leadership turnover, realignments of territories and also jobs happen yearly, dis-trust of leadership breeds very low morale among employees

    Advice to Management

get out into the filed and listen to the employees, their customers, etc. rather than hiring an outside company to reallign and resturcture. Leaders need to communicate more, establish trust, gather feedback on managers from subordinates
