I worked at Ventana Medical Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company has a lot to offer. It has been a great name to have on my resume and allowed me room to develop. The management was easy to access, professional, and responsive. The 401k, benefits, campus, and work life balance were great.

    Cons

The company had many silos, making it difficult to hear of anything outside your department. Most information was spread through lunchroom talk. The company is moving towards being more contract heavy, and the local talent agency does not treat its employees as well as Ventana management did. The company promotes slow, and prefers to hire from within. Its easier to get a higher wage by moving.

    Advice to Management

Dont move towards a more contract heavy system, or if you do enforce more rules on the agencies you are recruiting through. Your wasting talent this way, and it sullies your local reputation which is really what you need to maintain to keep people coming to Tucson. More transparency about wage growth, and not after two years please.

I have been working at Ventana Medical Systems full-time

    Pros

RTD is located in the gorgeous foothills on the west side of the Catalina Mountains about 45 minutes north of downtown Tucson. The campus has an amazing view of the mountains and the campus is a beautiful place with spectacular views as you move from building to building for meetings or enjoying lunch on the outside patio. Roche offers good work-life balance with most working 40 hour weeks – the parking lot fills promptly at 8 and empties at 5. In general, the people in Tucson and at RTD are kind people and the work environment is a relatively relaxed atmosphere. The strong cultural beliefs: People First and Succeed as One.

    Cons

There is relatively little opportunity for advancement or lateral movement. Other reviews have indicated that there are some “silos”. This is very true. You are expected to show up and do you job (no more, no less). The interaction that you have with other functional groups is *only* to facilitate the objectives at hand. Cross-training, shadowing, and conversations about job advancement/movement are extremely limited and somewhat discouraged. If you are looking for a predictable, regular routine (ie, boring) without much opportunity for advancement or change, this would be a great place to work. The weak cultural beliefs: Own It, Innovate Now, and Speak Up. All decisions are made by committee, very little talk about innovation, and I strongly warn anyone to speak up – it will work against you. Best to keep your head down and mouth shut.

    Advice to Management

Good leadership is about hiring high quality employees, empowering them, and most importantly valuing their contribution. This must be done on an individual level for it to really work. Because of the deep hierarchy that exists, the strong, inflexible opinions of some “leaders”, and the lack of support for an individual’s career development, many people here do not trust the leadership. There are some exceptions (eg, Biostats) and the style of these leaders should be modeled by others in the company.

I worked at Ventana Medical Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great size company. Used to be more like straddling industry and academia but corporate culture is more apparent with more and more Roche company and processes. Most employees genuinely want to help the lives of patients inflicted with cancer, you hear it every day.

    Cons

Less and less opportunity to grow into higher level management positions. Tucson is a hard area to recruit to so highly dependent on local talent, which is ok - but small pool.

    Pros

Benefits are great specially medical is very unexpensive. The enviorment is not that friendly but people will train you to do your job.

    Cons

Promotions are a myth in ventana. Teamwork in most deparments is also a myth everyone spends all day pointing fingers at each other for every single mistake.

    Advice to Management

Create a system where people can advance I saw plenty of people that deserved to be promoted and they were kept on the lower ranks.

    Pros

Great company, great mission, great collaboration and team dynamics

    Cons

Lack of defined hierarchical structure in CDx so that Senior scientists have more responsibilities than Research Associates. Career development support and opportunities are up to the employee as managers are not always good at this.

    Advice to Management

Pay better attention and take advantage to the talent pool you have at hand before it is too late.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Ventana Medical Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    A very spacious parking lot.

    Cons

Management consistently rewards the yes-men and not those who can get things done. Honest feedback is encouraged in theory but strongly discouraged in practice. Groupthink prevails. It's best to keep your head down and appear to be on board with any ridiculous idea put forth by management least you be labeled a "black hole".

    Advice to Management

Nearly all the managers in R&D are not proficient in technical matters and allow their ego and greed determine their actions. I don't know what advice to give to such people.

I worked at Ventana Medical Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits for direct employees.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't understand what it takes to develop a successful platform (reagents, hardware and software together) and sets unrealistic deadlines for product development. There has also been a strong move towards using contractors and 3rd parties rather than hiring direct employees. Eventually this will lead to Ventana being unable to innovate in a market which they have dominated for years.

    Advice to Management

Hire great people as direct employees. Build great teams with those people. Let those teams develop new and innovative products by giving them the time they need for the development process (which can be done while still holding them accountable for delivering a product in a timely fashion).
