    I worked at VentureBeat full-time

    Pros

I loved working at VentureBeat. The people are brilliant, talented, and hardworking. The work was interesting, fast-paced, and the pay was great.

    Cons

VB struggles financially pretty frequently> I was part of a round of layoffs in Summer 2016. It was super sad, but we ended on good terms.

    Advice to Management

Keep trying to solidify funding. You have a great product and a great team!

I worked at VentureBeat (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Ability to bring talented individuals onto the team
    - Networking

    Cons

    - Product: Destroying readers' experience by placing ads on ads on ads
    - Inability to retain talent by undervaluing individuals and not lending an ear to those offering fresh ideas
    - Transparency especially from management
    - No strategic or product plan/roadmap to speak of

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent; have a focus, look to get acquired.

    Key employee turnover is high

    Pros

Fantastic brand. Great, well-deserved reputation for news and events. Lots of smart people on staff who bust their behinds every day. Access to a terrific network throughout Silicon Valley. CEO who truly believes in what he's doing and has ambitious vision.

    Cons

Aimless management. Lack of coherent strategy. Consistently undercapitalized vs. the competition. Zero loyalty toward staff -- a tendency to treat employees as interchangeable, replaceable resources. Enormous technical debt. Fiscal cluelessness and outright financial mismanagement.

    Advice to Management

Focus on what's working: News and events. Treat employees as valuable individuals, not replaceable cogs. Try to get acquired by a company with a functional operational and technical infrastructure that can run the back end while you focus on what you do well.

I worked at VentureBeat full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The office is located in a great central location that is very easy to get to, the company has made a good name for itself in the valley. The events pull in very high level people, and the news team is a well oiled machine. Tons of talented people who all bring skills well beyond their job duties. Very reasonable working hours and flexibility.

    Cons

So. Much. Turnover. There was not a single month that went over without multiple people leaving which is drastic for a 50 person company. Management often felt frantic and unable to pick a clear direction. Priorities would often get catapulted to red alert and then cancelled right before done.

    Advice to Management

Clearer priorities, less fighting amongst yourselves, less decision by committee

I worked at VentureBeat full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people. Everyone at the company is amazing

    Cons

Executive leadership. There's always a shift in priorities which makes doing your job nearly impossible.

    Advice to Management

Hire more managers. There needs to be staff in between lower level employees and the executive staff or else you're going to continue to have an extreme rate of turnover.

    Pros

Few pros exist. Perhaps the best I can say about the company is that it had attracted a smart, talented, and hungry team in most departments: reporting and editorial, marketing, and technology. Sadly, after 2 RIFs that destroyed the workforce's confidence in leadership, it's hard to believe that the remaining team will, well, remain with VentureBeat for long.

    Cons

    Wow! Where to begin?

    * The exec team has little understanding of the business and the underlying drivers of building a strong and mutually reinforcing network of readers, content, and advertisers.

    * The board appears to allow conflict of interests to exist, which confounds the company's progress, angers advertisers, and mystifies its audience of readers, subscribers, and event attendees.

    * No one seems to know what the finances actually are nor can confidently forecast revenue and expenses. In less than a month, the company moved from hiring an impressive slate of senior managers to executing two RIFs, eliminating ~35% of the workforce.

    * Further, the company is ill-equipped to operate a digital media offering in 2016. It has little understanding of its readers, their interests, or what will bring them back to VentureBeat. It's inexcusable for a media site — especially one that claims to be at the forefront of tech and growth companies — to know so little and to have thought so little about how to build and maintain a valuable and engaged audience.

The company is now lost, reactionary, panicked, and unable to do right by longstanding employees. This is the worst work experience of my life, and it is unlikely that any future experience will come even close.

    Advice to Management

Do right by your employees. Stop investing in cockamamie ventures and focus on the core news business. Scale down, slow down, and focus.

I have been working at VentureBeat full-time

    Pros

    - Family friendly hours
    - Big business upside and market
    - Great content
    - Business leadership expanding
    - Shift in culture

    Cons

    - Working on getting a crisp new vision for the company (but getting closer)
    - Clear, consistent business direction is in the works
    - Stablizing some of the turnover that happened earlier in the year

    Advice to Management

More focus and resources on developing the new product and model
