I have been working at Vera Institute Of Justice full-time

    Pros

There is upward mobility -- several people have been promoted from within my department in the past year alone. There are clear expectations about what is expected from you and what constitutes success within a role. Good benefits and vacation and holiday time off is very good for a US nonprofit. HR is a supportive resource for everything from forms and transit questions to private coaching on how to approach conversations with department heads.

    Cons

There is a certain degree of resistance to inter-departmental interaction, but that seems to be changing somewhat. The age and history of any institution like Vera means there will be a certain resistance to change from some long-term staff members, but overall, leadership is very forward-thinking and eager to embrace new techniques that are proven to be successful.

    Advice to Management

Continue to embrace the reforming zeal of new staff members who are eager and equipped to improve existing systems.

I worked at Vera Institute Of Justice full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work that Vera engages in is very satisfying. Worked with a wonderful team that was committed to making social justice a reality for all.

    Cons

There was lIttle room to grow given that the directors of the programs I worked on were staying put. No upward growth.

I worked at Vera Institute Of Justice as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Everyone was nice and helpful

    Cons

There wasn't as much collaborating, or as much of a sense of community as I was hoping for, people mostly stayed at their desks

    Advice to Management

Work a little harder and creating a fun and happy office culture

I worked at Vera Institute Of Justice full-time

    Pros

Truly mission-driven. Staff very passionate about their projects and interested in others' projects.

    Cons

Rigid tracking of paid time off hours - little flexibility in this regard despite that salaried employees often work longer than 9-5 hours on a regular basis.

I worked at Vera Institute Of Justice as an intern

    Pros

fun office atmosphere; tight knit community; easy communication with higher-ups; staff bonding events such as a picnic and breakfast; good location

    Cons

very little office space; tight deadlines; sometimes boring unstimulating work depending on your position of course; very quiet office; not enough organization-wide bonding

    Advice to Management

More events that would connect workers at Common Justice and Guardianship to those working at the central office; create a more joyful atmosphere

I worked at Vera Institute Of Justice as an intern

    Pros

Interesting projects, with a very independent role. I wrote literature reviews, attended group meetings, and corresponded with the main research associate and team. This is a great internship- you are given real work to do and made to feel part of the team.

    Cons

New York is expensive and the stipend is just enough to live on.

I have been working at Vera Institute Of Justice full-time

    Pros

I love how engaged the entire office is with one another and each other's projects. I love how passionate fellow co workers are.

    Cons

There aren't too many cons I can think of. I have far less check-ins with supervisors than I expected.
