"Was wonderful, torn apart by Johnson and Johnson, catastrophic merger"

I worked at Verb Surgical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Was a wonderful place with lots of projects to get involved with, many friendly and bright people, and tons of opportunities for a motivated person. I loved waking up in the morning and going to work. Morale was pretty good in general and fantastic in my group.

    Cons

New CEO prone to temper tantrums (only the ex-Marine seemed to be able to handle him in his fits), refused to communicate with employees, laid off contractors doing vital work, reduced morale and created an environment where people no longer felt we mattered. Johnson and Johnson then bought us (for cheaper than we expected so we did not make much on our shares) and proceeded to oversee a comedy of a merger. Most Verb management left quickly. Big layoff in June. Upper management remains conspicuously silent about another round of layoffs. Many employees are fleeing the sinking ship. Many employees spent several months having no idea what we were working on. This waste must have cost a fortune.

I worked at Verb Surgical full-time for more than a year

    Pros

We were working on a cutting-edge medical device with a 'get it done' attitude. Verb also had some great experience and some great open mindedness of those without the experience.

    Cons

While some of management was great, there was largely a void of executive management. Verb is a small ~400 person company. The CEO, as of the summer of 2019, never walked the floors, spoke to anyone other than executive management and never had an all-hands meeting ever since he started. No communication from the top led to. As a direct result, the company lacked direction and focus. Additionally, there are too many wanna-be-'disrupters' engineers with no experience working in any company much less one in a highly-regulated industry. In other words, too many researchers and not engineers/developers. Working on a mission-critical medical device (affiliated and now part of JNJ, an international, massive company) is different than working on a iPhone game app out of a garage.

I have been working at Verb Surgical full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Fast paced environment working on important problems with a team of highly motivated and highly intelligent people.

    Cons

The fast pace means that lots of things are changing all the time, so it takes constant effort to stay up-to-date.

I worked at Verb Surgical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-I was an early employee who had the opportunity to work on many interesting projects. -Good resources to get things done. -I liked my manager and my team.

    Cons

-In the 3 years i was there the majority of my team decided they couldn't take it anymore and left which meant more work for people who stayed. -Schedule was prioritized over good work. Goals were set by people who didn't understand the work or product. -Total compensation was far below our peers in the Bay Area. Primarily due to absurdly low equity that was only given out when hired. There were many lies told about equity value and future compensation (we went through 3 HR directors in my time there who all made promises but had their hands tied by the execs). -The majority of the executive team was self interested and made the engineers lives more difficult, a few of them are gone by now.

I have been working at Verb Surgical full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting subject, free lunch & snacks, great public transportation, & beautiful work surroundings. A pleasant day-to-day experience here really boils down to your boss. PTO & benefits are pretty decent.

    Cons

Extreme lack of focus, communication, leadership, and community. No one ever seems to know what's going on. All of the projects are in competition, and upper management keeps too much info to themselves. PMO focuses on what makes their department look good. The entire company is extremely disorganized -- likely from trying to go too fast & some departments have overblown sense of importance. Senior leadership makes decisions without collaboration. Too much politics. The pay sucks. The buyout sucks. It feels like all the hard work people put in was pretty much for nothing.
