I have been working at Veritas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is a fast moving, somewhat chaotic environment - but that is what makes it so exciting and full of opportunity. Lots of support to make a difference!

    Cons

If you are not ready for change and opportunity, it's not the right spot.

    Pros

People, Technology, Gartner Leader, Enterprise Customers

    Cons

Growing pains since the Symantec split.

    Advice to Management

    Stay the course

I have been working at Veritas full-time

    Pros

I've been at Veritas for 3 years. I'm excited about the future of the company. The people I work with are AWESOME. I'm encouraged to see that former Veritas executives are returning to the company because they know that there's tremendous potential to be GREAT!

    Cons

I call Veritas an "up-start" vs. a start-up! When Veritas and Symantec split (October 2015); Veritas was on it's own again and tasked with reinventing themselves with 8K employees! That's no easy feat. I think that the Carlyle Group and the Executive Team are focus, determined, and on track.

    Advice to Management

An employee who feels valued and appreciated will always do more than what's expected.

I have been working at Veritas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees work hard as a team, takes pride in the work they do.

    Cons

Management team is poor at decision-making. Changes their mind often and then blames staff for their poor decisions. No credit given to staff who work long, late hours because the management team leaves at 4 pm.

    Advice to Management

You just went through yet another round of layoffs but didn't do enough to remove the poor middle management. Too many levels with a ridiculous manager to staff ratio. You've got managers who work only 4-5 hours a day with no acknowledgement for staff working late into the day.

I worked at Veritas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to telecommute, fairly good insurance plan, unlimited PTO (but you have to make it a point to use it-- studies show that people with unlimited PTO actually take less time off than counterparts who have finite PTO).

    Cons

Product Management builds products they like, not what customers actually want to buy. This means there are a lot of missing functionality in the products and a lot of klugey work-arounds, third party add-ons, and gaps.

Constant layoffs. No one believes their job is secure. Any role that can be shipped overseas has either gone or is on its way.

Pressure is on the support org to close tickets, not to solve problems. Customers don't like this very much.

No opportunities for career development. You can't even get in-person training on the products the company produces, let alone training to move into a new role.

Raises don't keep up with the rising costs of living, if you get a raise at all. Many years the company cries "the numbers are too bad for raises this year" and gives nothing. Bonuses are unpredictable, never what you expect them to be, and are based on such complex calculations that no one can explain why you got what you got (if you got anything at all).

    Advice to Management

Your people are your greatest resources. It's time to start treating them like it.

    I worked at Veritas full-time

    Pros

I liked my immediate co workers. Genuine people just trying to do an honest's days worth of work.

    Cons

I was pushed out and sexually harassed while in the Cloud BU. Not sure if it's still around.

Due to the ever changing management reorganization, my team was moved to the new Cloud BU. My move into that organization was tumultuous. The senior management brought in as yes men, and so long as you said yes, you were part of the club. Challenging assumptions or decisions was not welcomed, and as soon as it happened you were pushed outside of the circle. Once you were outside the circle, you were given less work and less information essentially giving them leverage that your job was obsolete.

All hand demos were vaporware where leadership opening lied about progress to Executives. It was embarrassing. This forced engineers to work long nights and weekends to meet impossible deadlines.

I documented all of this and spoke about it multiple times to HR. I was not protected and I felt that I was threatened to leave or be laid off in the next round. Ultimately, HR is there to protect the company, and I learned that the hard way.

    Advice to Management

None. They clearly wouldn't listen to me.

    Pros

Its a learning opportunity, exposure to large organizations all over the country. All of the change is fun at first...

    Cons

Systems are awful and you're expected to make it work when its broken. Quotas are a joke, be prepared to stay till 3a every 3 months (mandatory); Burnout, don't value their people.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people well and value them

    Pros

Some teams event, free food at the end of a quarter

    Cons

Management is a joke. Changed director 3 times in 2 years. Lots of turnover. Don't count on your comission as they do everything not to pay it. Make employees stay until 3am at the end of each quarter. Going down since Symantec. People quit all the time. Lots of stress.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees and their work.
