I worked at Verizon as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A whole lot of incredibly talented people to work with. Some of them are the best of the best. Lots of great locations. Good salary.

    Cons

The reason they have so many talented people was because they had mandatory layoffs every quarter, and they ran out of "bad" employees ages ago to fire. It means you get to work with people in constant fear that they won't have a job. This makes folks stab other people in the back frequently to protect their income.

There are departments that seem to exist for no reason but to try to sabotage other departments. The rivalries between them are amazing.

    Advice to Management

I swear, you should go all contractor. It's how you are treating your full time folks anyway. Also, your HR department is staffed by folks with no technical ability, yet they make hiring decisions. This has frequently resulted in you getting the wrong people. Take the power away from HR and give it to your hiring managers before HR ruins your company more.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Verizon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Annual bonus was awesome, but to stay long enough to receive it was challenging. Co-workers were quality folks and created a family type atmosphere.

    Cons

Micromanagement...Co-workers very personable, management - not so much. Long time, old school style of management didn't work for the good people on board. The style of management created an unusual turnover rate. Had I known the annual turnover rate, I wouldn't have gone there to work. At that point in time it was over 25% annually

    Advice to Management

Find fresh new faces to put in front of the customer. Keeping the hardliner, old school, style of management will certainly spell disaster (I've heard it already has).

I worked at Verizon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They offer a flexible schedule which is good when you need to beat the traffic. They salary is fair also up to par with industry average.

    Cons

There were a lot of pointless meetings and direct managers would just dish off their work on other people. Otherwise it was good.
