I worked at Verizon (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Training and 401k are great. Lots of areas for growth due to lack of staffing, so you wear many hats.

    Cons

Layoffs every December regardless of group performance. They are happen the first week so they can make the books look great for the next quarter stock review

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on the stock price and retain valuable employees

I worked at Verizon as an intern

    Pros

Great pay for the interns. If you are FLDP interns you get $22/hr, and operation interns get $18/hr. You work 40 hours a week, so you get to taste what a full time job at a fortune 10 firm is like. I started just after the long workplace strike so heard a lot of interesting stories from that event. Also was around when VZ took out YHOO. Got to present and purpose changes to an array of issues to VP's and SVP's, so that was also an exciting experience.

    Cons

A lot of office politics, chain of command, slow movement unless they really recognize a talent they need to keep in the STEM field. A lot of old and overly complicated systems that should be updated very soon, but have not because it doesn't fit an NPV profile. However, the long run benefits of a better system cannot be overlooked. A lot of word choices had to be carefully measured in presentations.

I worked at Verizon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good teams to work with, enjoyed the people I had to interact with day-to-day. Good telecommuting option (2 days a week). Good dress code (casual unless customer facing).

    Cons

Managment - individual contributor relationship is hostile in many departments in Southern California. This greatly detracts from productivity.

    Advice to Management

Decide what our goals are and aim for them, if the goals change, then make it clear to all teams what the new goals are and how they want to handle transition sites. I would suggest if you change goals, then set those changes for a FUTURE date, not NOW or else it will cost more money to adhere to the goals for sites already under construction.

    Give chance to grow.

I worked at Verizon full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits, co-workers, leaders. Sales was great when I wasn't micromanaged. Work hard and you might get ahead. Use the tuition assistance.

    Cons

The way the company spends money is crazy. Really long hours during holidays. No vacation during blackout times which was August, November, December. Look I loved Verizon. Every company has its pluses and minus and this company treated me well. All companies this size are volatile.

    Advice to Management

You have some great leaders but more bad than good. You started hiring based on demographic in stead of who the best person was.
