I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good workers and fairly decent primary product.

    Cons

I didn't feel that this was a place where the world could be changed, or marginally improved. It was more about taking as few risks as possible, while charging as much as possible for coverage that is not as ubiquitous as advertised, and technology that is pretty ubiquitous now.

More a dumb pipe than an innovator, although when you're there you'll be sold otherwise.

Feeling like the company just wants the cheapest labor possible at all costs.

Not much job security or a positive work environment due to rolling layoffs, job relocations to cheaper markets.

Promotion based on personal relationships with few qualifications to back them up. This creates an environment where management can't understand how to articulate what they want, causing employees to be stressed trying to read their minds.

Lacking in diversity at the C level.

    Lacking in vision and direction.

No work life balance. Stressed employees.

    Very top-down, sycophantic, and toady.

    Advice to Management

Focus on diversity, especially in corporate centers and leadership.

    Focus on genuine employee development.

Hold individuals accountable for their failures and reward successes.

Foster a professional culture that is performance oriented and focused on integrity.

    Hire more qualified professionals.

Reduce the room for office politics to create a truly transparent and professional environment.

I have been working at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Verizon is an exceptional company with a large scale that accommodates its benefit package. By far the best benefits package I've ever had from any company with the exception of the 401K match (6%) being slightly less than the financial sector from my previous job. The company has a lot of support in every department from retail, to the corporate team. Commission-based salary allows stellar reps to exceed quotas fairly easily and average reps still earn a decent wage. Many opportunities for growth, leadership, and even tuition assistance for those looking to further their education.

    Cons

Working in retail is hard mentally. Many reps become exhausted and burned out within the first year leading to a higher than expected amount of turnover. Perpetual promoting of great managers can often lead to gaps in management due to replacing those managers with less then great managers resulting in less support for reps. Commission structure changes every month as well as promotions which make it imperative and difficult to quote accurate pricing and disclosure. Multi-level style commission structure where managers are reward based on the success of their subordinates. Retail schedule is demanding because of holidays. Would not advise this position for couples that work different schedules as it may result in additional mental stress from constantly having to coordinate off days.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on developing future leaders. The commission structure drives results but does not stop to consider the individual value of each rep and seeks to box reps into a cookie cutter role that leads to turnover. Identify the strengths of each person, foster them, and provide a gateway to the next position. There is no excuse for burned-out reps to be continually held back from promotions due to bureaucracy.

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits were great. There was room for advancement. A great variety of people you worked with.

    Cons

High stress company. We called it Verizon change wireless. We were the largest and most productive call center, also the most expensive, and we got shut down. We were laid off.

    Advice to Management

Remember the customer service reps are the heart of the company. To make them feel as if they are not worthy of the job will not get good production. They are people and shouldn't be treated like any less than you.

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere, the benefits were the best of any job I had other than the USPS. Opportunities to advance. Offered many bonuses and incentives on top of your regular pay.

    Cons

Off days and managers were never permanent. And I had many good teams a lot of the time but then there were the bad ones

I worked at Verizon Wireless part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are usually great. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Very very corporate and dysfunctional. Horrible management who should be fired get to stay - they just get moved around. Worked there 15+ years and recently accepted a layoff instead of staying and going to a different job. Those who stayed are over-worked. If you are not in New Jersey or one of the new hubs the long-term outlook is not great.
