I have been working at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation is competitive but you will work very hard for it. Culture is excellent and exhibited and practiced from the top down. Benefits are excellent and cost reasonable. 401k match and profit sharing. Lots of training and professional development opportunities. Can advance if you're willing to relocate.

    Cons

Company is trying to transform into what it wants to be beyond a wireless carrier (cloud?, security?, telematics?, wholesaler?, etc) and is struggling with a vision, resources, and org structure to make it a reality. Several re-organizations over last few years so job security has frequently been a question. Often delayed response to competitors caused by management's concern that acting would result in not meeting Wall Street expectations. Not the "happiest" place to work because no result is ever good enough and successes aren't celebrated because the focus is always on the next weekly/monthly/quarterly goal.

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Verizon takes care of its own, provides support in your job and helps you succeed

    Cons

Gaining a management job was increasingly difficult, so one has to manage your own career path

    Advice to Management

Understand the field at the field level; consider who is performing well before conducting reorganizations in the business. :)

I have been working at Verizon Wireless as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

In-house design team is full of creative talented people. Co-workers are always willing to share information which makes it a great collaborative environment.

    Cons

Since the in-house team is new, there are growing pains with organization but I believe it will work out well.

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked for the company for 9.5 years. I was a customer service rep. Overall the company is good. I believe it does try to cater to everyones needs and it offered tuition assistance, medical and dental, 401k, incentive pay even for us, and even paid vacation and personal days. Aside from one manager or two that I wasn't fond of...in general..the employees in any location were mostly always friendly and welcoming. Through the tuition assistance I was able to take language courses to learn spanish. Also they had fun corporate events. It was a good run. Severance package wasn't bad either.

    Cons

On the retail level it's a mans world. I felt it was all about who you knew more than actual skill. Favoritism is real. Back end operations weren't paid enough attention too and managers could get lazy and leave a rep to deal with an irate customer. Upper management needs a manners course. They are all mostly rude.

    Advice to Management

At least be courteous to your employees. Even if you're not in the store with them all the time. If you want to motivate using negative tactics is not the way to light a fire. Open door policies need to have actual results and managers need to act like managers not outside observers.

    Cons

No integrity, management coached you to lie to customers to get sales, schedule was random each week and not good for work/life balance

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities to learn and grow your skill set.

    Cons

Long hours (evenings and weekends) in HQ location. There is also an expectation to be in the office every day. Working from home is rarely an option. There is also unassigned seating in the HQ office which can be challenging at times. Layoffs are starting to happen more often than in previous years due to industry disruptions (read news articles for more information). There is also minimal room for advancement despite the vast amount of time that is expected for your responsibilities. In the end, you are basically a number.

    Advice to Management

Revisit the severance process to ensure that you are not removing good resources who have the knowledge and skills required to grow the company and help increase bottom line revenue. Knowledgable resources are necessary to sustain the company. Also, consider the option for employees to work from home 1 day a week to create more of a work/life balance.
