I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The team was great and I learned a lot from my time with Verizon Wireless. They have a good tuition reimbursement program so its great if you want to get a higher degree.

    Cons

There is too much politics and it sometimes felt that people who sucked up to their managers got better rewards than people who actually did work.

    Advice to Management

You have to promote growth and new ideas because the leadership that is there now is trying their hardest to squash it.

I worked at Verizon Wireless (More than a year)

    Pros

It was a job with a paycheck.

    Cons

Tons of contractors (non-employees according to our badges). Once our 2.5 years were up...goodbye!.No way to become an employee so therefore no benefits including holidays, sick days and vacations.
No direction. I had to figure out on my own what to do and ride with it.

    Advice to Management

Contractors are people too. It would be nice if my badge said "Contractor", not the degrading "Non-Employee".

I have been working at Verizon Wireless (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Will hire out of college without much experience. Some room for growth. Good benefits and decent bonus if the company performed well that year.

    Cons

Everyone wants to become a manager which causes disorganization and lack of proper leadership. Not a place to stay long term

    Advice to Management

Focus on quality rather than quantity.

    Pros

Job stability, Fortune 500 company, arguably number #1 in the industry, room for growth, good bonus and competitive salaries.

Benefits are OK, but nothing to write home about. They're actually on par with the rest of industry benefits is you ask me

    Cons

In IT they over work you, you'll have to give up your evenings during the week, and many of your weekends too.

Also, many incompetent and mediocre developers (looks like they have not even written a computer program before in their lives), makes the job that much harder for the few IT developers that are actually good.

If you're a good developer, don't look to advance your skills. You'll spend most of your time cleaning up the mess of other so called developers. If you're really good just go to Google or similar company, don't waste your time here

    Advice to Management

When you make someone work close to 80 hours a week, ask yourself this question: When I was a developer myself (if you were at all), would I have completed unreasonable/unrealistic work int he same time or less? Chances are the answer is "no". No human being can, yet you're always putting unrealistic demands on IT staff. It's a matter of time before the you lose all the talend

I have been working at Verizon Wireless (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Competitive Comp and Benefits. Challenging environment. Great pockets of people. Fast Paced and the ability to move around the business regularly

    Cons

As with any large company, tons of politics. Direction isn't a senior level strong suit. Some senior leaders are excellent, while others seem to be more interested with knocking others down to raise themselves up

    Advice to Management

Get back to fundamentals, cut the dead wood, and stick to a single strategy.

I worked at Verizon Wireless as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Huge company if that is what you want. Great campus with good food and a gym. Leadership I was under was very helpful.

    Cons

Very hard to work on projects that will actually make a big difference in the company. Always a lot of hoops to jump through to get anything done.

    Advice to Management

Allow there to be more opportunities for software people to contribute in real ways to the company as opposed to just doing minor changes to APIs that don't matter at all.
