I have been working at Vermilion Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company culture driven by CEO and generally very good leadership throughout organization
Consistently strong share performance translates to very good long term incentive
Generally competent and committed staff with poor performers being let go
Voted Great Place to Work for 3 years in a row
Well respected by peer companies and industry
Genuine care for community investment and social responsibility
Nice, modern office space with drinks, coffee, and breakfast for employees

    Cons

Internal moves can be tricky given people stay in their jobs for a long time
A handful of mediocre middle managers, but all companies have a few

    Advice to Management

The executive management is top notch. They genuinely make an effort to listen to employees suggestions and have done a great job. The management take a very careful, conservative approach which has meant no major mistakes for the company and shareholders.

I have been working at Vermilion Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company is very involved in the communities they operate in and try to do more than just throw money at a problem. The compensation is excellent, the reputation is top-notch, management is very professional and methodical. Although very conservative, there is little threat of losing your job so long as you contribute accordingly. I loved going to work every day.

    Cons

Largely due to the structure of the long-term incentives (and the significant value of it), it is rare that people leave the company. Because they grow very carefully and slowly, there is not much opportunity to be promoted or move between groups.
Along with the significant compensation is an unwritten expectation of 'getting the job done'. That often encompasses a substantial amount of overtime during some periods. Although tiresome, I did not feel as though this was too much to ask in the grand scheme of things. Again, this is a great company. Definitely more pros than cons.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the fantastic job! I truly loved working for Vermilion.

I have been working at Vermilion Energy full-time

    Pros

Salary and benefits. Company has a Philanthropic bent.

    Cons

Difficult if female. All operations women (outside of HR) with any authority demoted. Difficult if non-engineer. All non-engineer staff with any authority demoted in favour of engineers, some with less than 6 months at company. President is American and brings the USA litigious approach. Core company values are a myth if President perceives interference with his agenda. Philanderer and favors American friends. HR group is massive reflecting on number of HR related tracking transactions and corporate staff numbers. HR members are feared due to executive level influence. HR business partners will not hesitate at going above supervisory head to achieve HR agenda. Very political, very camped (guarded) departmental environment. Attempting to affect change where it is desperately needed can be an exercise in international career threatening relations.

    Advice to Management

Consider being equal opportunity from a professional/functional/gender perspective. Layoff some HR staff. Canadian leadership. De-camp: departmentally working with each other.

I have been working at Vermilion Energy full-time

    Pros

Smart and engaged colleagues and a fast paced, at times rewarding, workplace.

    Cons

Increasingly poor treatment of employees, to the point of deceitful. Management micromanages while all others are not given authority or decision making responsibilities. Work life balance is a joke.

    Advice to Management

To be the best oil and gas company in the world begins and ends with its employees. Try treating them as people as opposed to a dollar figure.
