    Advice to Management

allow more flexible working time and encourage more socialization without the company besides beer hour

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits and work life balance are outstanding here. Facilities, cafeteria, gym, are great. Decent camaraderie among employees. Good internal employee resource networks. Some people do want to improve things but they seem to be few and far between.

    Cons

I don't feel in my day to day patients are mentioned much. Despite this not being a huge company (`2000 people), some chains of communication and processes feel extremely hierarchical. I get the sense that many are here just to collect a pay check and do the bare minimum to get by- certainly not as much passion as I have seen in other pharma/biotech companies in this area. Pipeline questionable- don't know for how much longer we will have these big shiny buildings. High turnover in the Clin Ops section. People don't seem to question anything, they just do it.

    Advice to Management

Allow people to delegate things. Don't be afraid to manage up. Be more realistic about the pipeline.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people and well equipped lab space

    Cons

Getting a full time position seems out of the question for the moment despite being reviewed well. Not as much learning opportunity as I was led to believe.

    Advice to Management

Build your talent from the inside and reward those who are willing to seek out new ways to help and learn. Provide more opportunities to people who aren't at the top instead of excluding them.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

In research the atmosphere is generally good and most of your colleagues are great people aside from the few outliers. Overall experience will definitely depend on your manager/supervisor and how they feel you should progress.

    Cons

Corporate decisions are tough and people can be let go without notice or sites closed. It sucks, even if it logistically makes sense.

    Advice to Management

Seems like changes new changes may be for best. Be more transparent and less cryptic about intentions. Organization structure could still use some improvement.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and salary higher than most Boston companies. Nice location. Excluding upper management really talented people to work beside.

    Cons

Upper management uses bully tactics and if your female do not expect to advance into a leadership position. HR continues to support the employee at will approach and terminates employees with no justification but because they can. Upper management is all about brown nosing and managing up. They never value their staff that does the majority of the work. It is a high school mentality and toxic environment.

    Advice to Management

Everything starts at the top. Leadership needs a complete overhaul.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Great people; great location; great products for CF

    Cons

Very, very fast paced! Management may want to clean house of leaders who are toxic

    Advice to Management

Don't ignore toxic VPs that have been in position for years - may be reason for turnover

    Pros

Interesting work - drug discovery is fascinating

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great pipeline
    Hard working and smart employees
    Creative approach to projects
    Most individuals are very collaborative

    Cons

Working at Vertex for just over a year I experienced a lot of wonderful, smart and collaborative colleagues. However, I noticed there is a real problem with knowledge silos. There is also a lot of posturing among mid-management. It was disillusioning to me that individuals felt compelled to "one up" each other at meetings. In addition, I found that some individuals were very intractable and were inflexible about considering different ideas/approaches.

    Advice to Management

Not sure if it's the company culture or just individual personalities. However, I think a stronger emphasis on collaboration and appreciating the value individuals bring to a project would help promote more collaboration and sharing of knowledge.
