I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Nice location. Stock if you can hold out for 5 years. Otherwise, it will be rescinded.

    Cons

Sr. Management in Quality division is out of touch. If you leave before your the gifted stock is vested, you lose it. So, it's not the gift it looks like.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. 4 weeks vacation to start. Great Fan Pier location. Flexible work scheduled due to rough commute. Beer hour on Thursdays!

    Cons

Sr. Management Team is clueless about the reality of day to day activities. As a result, they make impractical and superficial decisions about staffing. The "employment at will" makes me very nervous about security and fosters an environment of distrust and unnecessary competition which results in employment being a popularity vote instead of being about production and work quality.

    Advice to Management

Perception is just that - dig deeper.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice benefits and pay. Beautiful location and buildings. Good team environment. Focus on helping treat rare diseases. 4 weeks vacation

    Cons

Constantly reminded you can be fired. People getting fired all the time. "Employment at Will" is fully taken advantage of here. Forced to brown nose bad managers or face potential job loss

    Advice to Management

Reorg to align employees under managers whom are strongly supported by employees

    Pros

Vacation time, benefits, compensation in a nutshell. A lot of people are very smart and motivated. The building is great.

    Cons

The politics are dirty, and the work life balance creates a lot of 'unnecessary' stress. The favorites will keep getting promoted like clockwork, so if you care about a career, it's either kiss up or kiss goodbye.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites. Evaluate people on their individual merits. And when the 'non-favorites' are given opportunities to prove themselves, do set them up for success.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits including vacation time off and stock plan. The building is spectacular. Many of your colleagues will be dedicated to their program.

    Cons

Competitive workplace with rampant corporate politics. The company works in silos and within a department, you can be pigeon-holed. Promotions are few and far between.

    "Company needs overhaul"

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

Benefits are above average and probably why many people stick around for some time. Belief in discovering lifesaving medicines is sincere.

    Cons

Senior leadership spends significant time micro-managing, while enjoying lavish salaries which are even more abhorrent when juxtaposed against the relatively poor financial health of the organization. Managers tend to play favorites which means promotions are rarely based on actual performance. The corporate culture says everything is a priority, which means nothing is a priority.

    Advice to Management

Focus on people management and ruthless prioritization. Career development is nonexistent. Disproportionate resources are directed at recruiting, probably because smart people are leaving as they are not recognized for their contributions. Emphasize the importance of work/life balance.

    Pros

Benefits are great and the base vacation time is 4 weeks plus the company closes down between the week of Christmas and New Year's Day.

    Cons

The workload is extremely heavy and the company runs lean. Everything is critical and when everything is critical, nothing is critical. People are not always treated fairly. Other companies pay more with a lot less stress!

    Pros

    Cons

A lot of politics and good employees leave.
Promotion is not by performance, rather by favor.
