    Pros

The benefits were amazing and the pre-launch excitement was infectious.

    Cons

Once they started bringing in former "big pharma" execs, the culture changed and it became every person for themselves.

    Pros

Great benefits and many nice people work there. Very impactful programs.

    Cons

The site head, Paul is excellent. However, I found many of the senior scientific staff smart, but very political, not inspiring, and weak leaders overall.

    Pros

I really enjoyed being an intern at Vertex, I was in an R&D role at the company. My manager was very excited about having an intern and had a great project for me. I was able to have a say in what I was doing and get direction and help at the same time. I felt like I was treated as a team member in the group and not below others. Great location.

    Cons

It was difficult to meet other interns outside of my department. There weren't really events for us to get to know each other until the end of the summer. Also, I am an undergraduate but the department I was working in doesn't hire many people directly from undergrad, they prefer them to have graduate degrees of some sort.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice people, money to buy equipment. Work, life balance is good.
Pay is comparable to all big pharma.

    Cons

no career development programs, promotions based on time with company. Some managers are just managers because they have been here for a long time and are not good manager.
Good scientists but not good people managers.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Worked in orphan disease area targeting Cystic Fibrosis, contributed to development of two next generation CF clinical candidates

    Cons

Job growth in research is slow

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Less than a year)

    Pros

Give the interns work similar to a full employee. I felt like a member of the team despite being a summer intern.

    Cons

Could be more intern programs to help the interns get to know one another. It was difficult only knowing about 5 people outside my own team.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. 4 weeks vacation to start. Great Fan Pier location. Flexible work scheduled due to rough commute. Beer hour on Thursdays!

    Cons

Sr. Management Team is clueless about the reality of day to day activities. As a result, they make impractical and superficial decisions about staffing. The "employment at will" makes me very nervous about security and fosters an environment of distrust and unnecessary competition which results in employment being a popularity vote instead of being about production and work quality.

    Advice to Management

Perception is just that - dig deeper.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Great company atmosphere. Really interesting people and projects. The intern program is really great and I would highly recommend.

    Cons

My department specifically wasn't really prepared to have an intern and while I had a great experience there could have been more enthusiasm toward teaching a younger employee.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice benefits and pay. Beautiful location and buildings. Good team environment. Focus on helping treat rare diseases. 4 weeks vacation

    Cons

Constantly reminded you can be fired. People getting fired all the time. "Employment at Will" is fully taken advantage of here. Forced to brown nose bad managers or face potential job loss

    Advice to Management

Reorg to align employees under managers whom are strongly supported by employees
