    Pros

Great benefits and many nice people work there. Very impactful programs.

    Cons

The site head, Paul is excellent. However, I found many of the senior scientific staff smart, but very political, not inspiring, and weak leaders overall.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Benefits, salary probably the only reason people stick to the company

    Cons

Micromanagement, promotion based on politics not work/ideas/results. Some managers are terrorizing scientists and kicking off hard workers for crazy reasons: too much results (n+1 feeling threaten), a knowledge superior to their n+1, we end up with incompetent people at high level of the organization and regularly promoted, people that didn't bring any significant result over the years but by taking credit from other hard worker... Main result, smart people are leaving since they are not recognized/rewarded for their contribution

    Advice to Management

Kick out few damaging people, names are known
Train HR to stop those people from poisoning the company
Stop hiding and start taking brave decisions and see how the sites will benefit from it !

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great and what keeps people working there for a long time. The company also has a great goal on improving lives for people with the diseases they work on.

    Cons

It is hard to work with the upper management. The work load given is way too much and long hours are a must to stay I top of the work load. Hard to have any life outside of work.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Vertex @ SD served free breakfast and held community gatherings. Held numerous promotions for CF in the surrounding community.

    Cons

A great degree of bureaucracy. People mind their own business and the scientists appeared more pessimistic than usual.

    Advice to Management

Allow students to diversify their exposure to big Pharma, even if they are interning inside a particular cell culture lab in the electrophysiology department (i.e. Expose them to process and development, HTS, etc.) Diversification is important for students (especially the interns!).

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Back in 2006 when I first joined the site in San Diego, Vertex was a special place. Scientists were excited about their work and one could sense the enthusiasm at project team meetings. Personally, I had a great experience my first 6 years there. The work-life balance is great, but it does depend on your group dynamics. And from what I've observed, the benefits are right up there at par with the best companies.

    Cons

Vertex has experienced an immense growth phase due to the success of 2 marketed drugs. As a result, the bureaucracy has increased to a ridiculous amount. The values of the company have had to shift due to being a publicly traded company. There is nothing really exciting behind the CF drugs, so if they don't continue to work in the clinic, I smell trouble for the company.
